Conpewter, what part of the country are you in, I'm in central VA and I'm wondering what regional variances exist.

I wish you luck. Just don't get discouraged. As you can see by following the thread, many of us search many thousands of coins without finding anything of note. But that's the reason we look. The rarer the coin, the bigger the find. I started with very little cash, but kept the coins and swapped them for more. I never "cashed" them in. Every month when my small annuity check came, I would buy a few rolls of something. I added that to my "swap bag". Before long I had a lot of coins to trade with banks. I still add every month. So it becomes like a "coin savings account". I never use the coins for spending money, no matter how tempting it might be. I would much rather search coins than take in a movie for example, and the price of a ticket would get me a lot of cents to search. lol

3 foreign coins (Sweedish, English and Guatamalean) in a box and a war nickel! Pretty good box..

It goes in streaks. I've had a streak of 9 skunk boxes in a row, and another of 13 skunks in row. Erin (AggieCollector) set the thread record with (I think) 17 skunks in a row. Keep at it, luck will hopefully change soon for you.

So far I've searched a total of 12 boxes of halves (two per week for the first two weeks, then 8 boxes last week).

    Week 1 (2 boxes) - (1) 90%, (11) 40%
Week 2 (2 boxes) - skunked on both.
Week 3 (8 boxes) - brought all 8 boxes home to find that 6 of them had been previously searched. The rolls were either folded at one end and marked with a purple 'dash' or split down the side as if with a razorblade and then taped back together. Of the remaining two boxes, one was a skunk and in the other I found (1) 90% and (6) 40%

All Kennedy's so far, no Walkers or Franklins. I have 8 more boxes sitting at the bank now, waiting for me to come pick them up after work... I'm hoping they're now digging down into their latent stash rather than just resurfacing the same boxes brought back by other hunters around here. I dump all mine into a different bank's coin machines for Dunbar, so as not to recontaminate things.

Hit up a bunch of banks on my usual route, nothing but clad. One bank had 75 Ikes, one of which was a '72 type 2. That's the third I have found now.

Congrats on your finds (though what a bummer about the dump boxes). Welcome to CT and welcome to our little obsession....

Congrats on the Mercury, it would be a very pleasant surprise to me finding one.

Went through 8 rolls of halves today. 0 silvers, but did find 4 for my collection, including a 2005 and this 2001S. First S half I've ever had:

Hey there are so many acronyms in the coin business, its very easy to overlook the obvious.

If this question veers too far off topic, feel free to let me know and I'll delete it.

I'm new to the hobby. As far as finding rolls to search, is the process as simple as going into a local bank (I'm guessing the best results would come from one where you held an account) and asking for a roll of the particular denomination you're trying to search?

    JMP,

It's a great question. In my experience, it's best to be extremely polite and accommodating when asking tellers for rolls of change, especially if you want your bank to order coin for you (if you need boxes of something like halves.) Some branches will differ on their "official" policy of whether they will even sell coin to you (if you're a member or not.) My usual plan is to have a couple supply banks and a few drop banks. If a teller supervisor is kind enough to order me boxes of coins (some will, some won't) I NEVER take the loose change back to that branch. I let the supply banks see the thankful, happy collector side. The drop banks, which hopefully have a coin counter in the lobby (none here in Salt Lake City do yet, unfortunately) I will be even more polite with. I have a bank here where I return up to $2,000 in halves every other week - and I never try to cause a fuss or be a problem customer. I realize that the drop bank has to count the change and send it off (which costs them money and gives them an extra "task") so I'm really nice at those banks. If a bank starts giving me problems when I bring them change (one branch told me they could no longer accept half dollars if I was going to bring in so many) then I will do my best to drop my frequency, switch drop banks often, or not look through so much coin for a bit.

The nicer you are, the more likely you are to get someone to order coin for you, and the more likely a teller is to hold something back for you because it looks strange. Of course, I am more than honest with a teller who asks me why I do what I do, or how much something is worth - especially if it's a supply bank. I feel that, by being courteous and honest, I have nothing to feel uncomfortable with when I walk in to the bank - and it's a pleasant experience when I come in. I don't want to be "that guy" that they dread seeing every week.

I worked as a teller for a bit - and I ALWAYS was friendly with people that brought in bags of change! :) I wonder why?

AO, if you search about 5k in dimes, I'm sure you'll find at least one, if not a couple. They're really not all that rare.

Barbers, OTOH, haven't found one of those yet.

That T2 '72 Ike is definitely MS, somewhere around 63-64. :D $100 coin.

I found 1 40% on my first eleven boxes coin roll hunting. Since then, I've had a a couple of boxes where I pulled 30+ keepers along with several boxes with 5+ keepers. May want to try and switch up your ordering banks to get a different supply.

Keep at it and good luck!
