Based on how coins are minted, isn't it impossible for a coin to be struck with the obverse design on both sides? Unless an obverse die was used in place of the reverse? Just wondering.

Indeed. Apparently the dies are now keyed so it is not possible to use a hammer as an anvil and visa-versa. Dual denomination coins are still possible though. Of course I wasn't thinking of any of this when I first noticed it, and due to the fact that the craftsmanship is pretty impressive, I was pretty much fooled until I came to my senses.

I investigated further last night to satisfy my curiosity and found that they are a few companies that make these, but the only one that explained the process said that they cut the coins in half and rejoin them. The coin I have was dished out with a new obverse seated down inside, leaving the smooth edge intact. It really is a neat coin and they are marketed as a better option to a two sided quarter as most people wouldn't expect a two sided nickel.

Even though it turned out to be fake, it is still a nice novelty and consider it a nice find.

As far as my other results, I didn't do so hot but I did find my first war nickel but it is in pretty bad shape. The outer layer if flaking off and has a good bit of corrosion. Also landed what appears to be a 1976 nickel without its clad, and possibly a 64 that is the same. (Hard to tell) Lastly I found 2 wheaties.

Nickels aren't clad, they're a mix of copper and nickel. CuNi. So it's impossible for them to be missing a clad layer.

My 'beginning of the week' box produced nothing...not even a NIFC. I kept a '71 D that is close to uncirculated condition. Just picked up my midweek box so hoping things turn around. May switch to dimes for a week or 2 if this box is a bust.

Ha, I concur. I just did those two dime boxes at work.

Sucked. 1 '42 Merc in the second roll, then skunked the rest of the way.

My first find from a roll ever! Just found a 1998 WAM. I know it's not much but I was tickled to death to find SOMETHING since I've been through about $15 worth of pennies since I started. I'm still not that great at seeing double dies (even in pictures on here with yellow arrows pointing to them) but I guess it's just something that develops over time.

I searched a box of pennies and found several wheaties. Nothing spectacular but I did find a nice 1962D penny which seems to be in prestine condition. I also found what may be a 1991D ddo. I have been trying to take a clear picture of that coin but as of now no success. As soon as I do, I will post that pic as well.

I've never gone to the bank to get rolls or boxes...but today I was at the bank to make a deposit...and since frequenting the forums for the past week...the thought occurred to me to ask for some from the teller...He ran around looking and brought back two Kennedy halves and said you can check with us everyday we get dollars and halves all the time but this is all there is right now...OK...I took the whole whopping dollars worth...so...out of 2...LOL..I got a 71 and a 64...pretty 64 too...that's pretty good odds...right? I've already decided to go back tomorrow...rolls...I'm thinking rolls...

and THIS is how an addict is born...

    Peace,

I really don't get the lack of Mercs down there. I find one about every $800 I search. If you take out my biggest score, one every $1600.

I'm also averaging 1 silver dime per $100 searched, so... Maybe my area is just good for dimes.

Good luck with the bag, hope it's peppered with Mercs for ya.
