Your best bet is to get both volumes of the Cherrypicker's Guides---5th Edition Volume I (half cents up through nickels) and 4th Edition Volume II (half dimes up through all the rest including halves, dollars etc.) They aren't cheap, but they are worth it if you want to seriously look for variety and error coins. I picked up both of them for 45 bucks on eBay----they usually sell for that much EACH. There are other online sources for whatever particular denomination coin you are looking at as well. Google "XXXXXX varieties and errors" where the X's would be Jefferson Nickels, Lincoln Cents, etc. You can also check out CONECA's website----they have a very complete list of varieties and errors. Here's the link:

Here's another good link for cents:

    and another:

    and yet another:

This should keep you busy reading for awhile!

The no "FG" is caused by either an overpolished die, worn die, grease filled, or deteriorated die.

Searched that last box of halves and got nothin. So for my last 10 boxes I've pulled 1 silver. What is up with the halves that have been stripped of the reading on the edge? I can't see that a half from 1985 could see so much circulation the the edge wears off compleatly??????

I had been told in another thread that those were casino coins , from back in the days when you used actual coins in slot machines.

Well, the final tally is in from box 3, and all I can say is WOW--what a monster!

After the first roll with 1 40%, the box eventually produced FORTY TWO 40%ERS!:hail:

    Here's the rundown:

    1-1965
    7-1966
    13-1967
    17-1968
    4-1969

AND, the icing on the cake:

    1-1976-S Bicentennial SILVER:thumb:

    Oh, and 1 NIFC:)

I guess this pretty much makes up for the 3 prior shutouts!

Box 4 tommorrow----all I can do is hope that when the bank pulled the boxes that box 4 was next in order to box 3!!!!

    Man, that is fantastic !

I dumped all 10 rolls into a bucket and it was a hoard. Some MS 60/70 coins that I thought were much later at first glanced. And 1 1936 S VF-EF and 1 1970 S that I set aside for another look. 60-70 copper coins. Eyes got too tired to continue. LOL

Another $500, another blank... I might be getting outta the game for a bit... just do dimes for a while unless I get a couple blank boxes of those too...

C'mon Train, don't get discouraged. I can understand though---it is VERY frustrating to get shutout. I was discouraged after just 3 in a row-----

I've got one more box of halves I can get without ordering... if that's a shutout, I figure I'll lay low for a couple months... maybe do some while on vacation (First week of Aug.) because that's highly probable to be a different market for sorters and whatnot...

How do you guys get such a large volume of boxes per week? I mean it was a struggle for me to just get one, and I had to wait a week for the bank to order it too.

I ordered my first box yesterday and the teller told me that it's not a problem to order the boxes but it does takes about 4 days. I'll see how that box goes and then I have about 3 different banks in my area and I'll try one of those next to see if it can speed up the process.

I think you'll have to establish a relationship with a key person at your bank, like the head teller or manager, which is what I did. I also happen to live in a small town that is very friendly and helpful bunch of folks, so this helps too.

I think deep down that they really don't like doing it, but being nice to them, bringing them cookies or donuts or some token helps---

The second BIGGER problem when you start ordering large numbers of boxes, is where you return them. NEVER bring them back to the same bank, and good luck finding a bank that is willing to take (in my case) 5000 coins a week that weigh almost 125 lbs.-----

Went to the local grocery store this morning with my ten year old son. While I was checking out my son checked out the coin changer machine which he usually does. He came back gleaming. I asked him what he had found and he said a quarter. He showed me the quarter (looked a little brighter than newer quarters) checked it and ................ 1964 D VF. He does better than me finding silver, I think I've created a monster.

Nice! I haven't started checking the machines yet, don't go shopping too often.

Ironically the bank I've been going to for more than half of my 20 year life was the most unwilling to order boxes for me, I guess because they are small, and because the new staff is increasingly unfriendly. So they are now my dump bank. I guess I'll just stick to wachovia for boxes until I open a new account somewhere else, and keep getting rolls from the PNC I've had great luck at. Sometimes I wish I was a bank teller.

Order multiples at one time, and use different banks. I'll probably have one of my friends at my closest TD bank order me $1k in dimes and $1k in halves sometime this week.
