    Nickel question

Just curious why people pull all nickels that are pre-1960. I know nothing of nickels to be honest so I'm curious. I have jars of change to go through with my son that we've sorted out into denominations. When we arne't getting any halves we've just been sorting through other coins. Havne't found much so far after going through pennies. Probably 20 wheats with the earliest being 1911. I find myself going back through them though everytime I realize there is another error to look for.....1992 CAM, 1998 and 1999 WAM, 60s and 70s dates and probably lots of others I have no clue about.

Whats with the nickels though. He has no desire to get a nickel book and try to fill it because I've tried. Is it worth pulling them and just sending them to someone who might want them?

    Thanks

Pre-60 rolls command a premium on Ebay, I believe. That's why I pull 'em.

I just pull them because I like holding onto coins that are 50+ years old. I'm new to collecting and this is something that isn't super hard to find. I'll probably stop roll-searching as soon as I fill-up my Nickel book. Also it gives me something else to look for besides just Silver War Nickels or the even more elusive Buffalo. I have thought like L-train said previously about trying to sell rolls of them later, not expecting to get a lot for them though.

Erin is the king of this........he has a secret weapon. He takes his very cute children. They are small enough that people fall over themselves to give them coins. How awesome is that!!!

Congrats Erin on another great find!

Did you see my post answering your question on the Canadian silver half?

Well I finally had a good box of half dollars. Found 14 40% and 2 90%. I was just starting to get discouraged too!

Nice box! I need to borrow a few of my cousins kids when I head to the bank sometime... or maybe steal my friends' kids.

Good luck. I never found a 1938 S, so finally bought one just to complete the book I started in 1958. Wish I would have bought one in 1960. LOL

    Fridays Treasure Hunt Results

Bob is correct. In fact, I would suggest if you guys roll search and don't have a small child of your own, you may want to borrow a neighbor kid. Preferably, a 7/8 year old boy with a couple of missing front teeth. When he tells the tellers he is on a treasure hunt for half dollar coins, they melt and can't get to their vaults fast enough to bring him coins. HAHAHA - I know - bad dad etc. But he is developing good communication skills and when he gets older I am sure all the coins will go to him anyway so while I may be extorting a kid, ultimately the kid gains. :)

Now for Friday results. We searched two boxes on Friday and one on Saturday.

    1st box - 1 1964, 2 40%'ers.
    2nd box - 1 1943, 2 40%'ers.
    3rd box - 3 40%'ers.

    3 boxes, 9 total silver.

However, we did go to about 15 banks in one area on Friday and had very good success as 9 of the 15 banks had at least one silver. Also, found a highly unusual amount of old ones to my son's delight.

Total for Friday's bank run ($420 CWR, $90 loose):

    43 40%'ers.
    12 1964's
6 Franklins (5 in one roll)
5 Walkers (1 each at 5 diff banks)
    1978S
    1987S

Really fun day. As soon as the camera battery charges, I will post a pic.

    Only partly true. From Wikipedia:

"In some years the coins have not been released for normal circulation, but only in special mint rolls, mint sets, and proof sets for collectors (1970, 1987, 2001 {P only, D Was issued for circulation}, 2002 - 2004, 2006 - 2009)."

2001 "P's" were only issued in mint sets and not released into circulation----

    Got Bent

Out of two boxes I found one 1929, one 1930S, and several from the 40's and 50's. Here is the 1929, slightly bent. I'm wondering at what point in its life it got bent. The crease appears well worn. Any ideas?

I have a few wheat cents that are bent, cut, fused, etc. I think years ago people did more with their hands and improvised repairs, etc. A small flat, round piece of copper could be used for a lot of things besides being the bypass conductor in a fuse box. Drill a hole in one and it's a copper washer. Bend one and use it behind a mount bolt for a shim, and so on. In shop classes (metal and auto) they were chrome plated. I have used them as electrodes is solutions that I ran a current through with a battery charger. The copper was maleable and could be hammered into shape. Just a handy piece of metal in a shop. So how did it get bent ? Make a guess.
