People are cracking them open and spending them at face value.

There is a smaller population of halves compared to any other coin, hence a greater incidence of finding them when someone spends one. Plus the coin doesn't circulate much.

I suspect that proof dollar coins are going to be second for frequency of finding them, but this billion coins per year is going to put a damper on any sort of search efforts.

I think i might have to try and do a circulated proof set. Maybe get a plain Whitman folder and write in the dates. I don't search enough halves for me to complete this set anytime soon, $300 a week in halves isn't anything compared to a box or two. :)

    Good advise.

Tonight I went through a box of halves. I found a '63-D Franklin, a '64 Kennedy, two '67 Kennedys, a gold-plated '89 Kennedy, and four '04-D Kennedys. Probably my most unusual box I've had in close to two years.

Ever use "sound" to detect silver? Last week I searched a box of halves by simply looking at the edges, a "fast" search if you will. I pulled 6 silvers on sight alone, but missed 3 visually. I located them by "shuffling" each roll before dropping it into the returns bag.

Visually checking each coin is by far and away the best strategy to follow. As your experience grows you'll be able to develop time saving methods, but there is always a chance that a keeper will slip past you.

Roll searching can be a lot of fun. It is an inexpensive way to stay involved in the hobby of coin collecting and searching rolls can be very rewarding at times. My best pull so far is a 1949-S Franklin that would probably garner MS-64. I've put together an almost complete set of Franklins pulled exclusively from rolls.I'm missing just 2 coins.

Proofs are always a welcome find from the usual. To date I've found 20 Kennedys. Most are very circulated, but a couple still look almost still proof-like with just a nick or two here and there. Kind of makes me wish I'd bought a Dansco album with slots for proofs.....

BigsWick, I initially considers just searching the edges, but I've found so much that couldn't be found by the edges alone that I will never bring myself to do it.

Here's this weeks proof haul for me. A couple of these might still grade PR-60 or higher as a nicks and scratches are not considered wear.

I find that a quick Acetone dip takes off most of the dirt and fingerprints greatly improving the coins appearance.

To date, my best finds include a 1960 Franklin Proof and a 1912D Barber in EF-40 condition.

I'm not one to shout, but ever see those people watching Football or Soccer and go nuts when their team scores, it was kind of like that when I found it. The unusual thing was, there was nothing else of interest in the box, it was a lone find.

Anyway, here's three more proofs I found this morning, I have a few more boxes to go through for this week. There seems to be a whole slew of proofs this week. Really unusual.

Good lord! how many boxes of halves do you look through in a single week gatzdon?

It varies, but this week it will be about 21 boxes.

My "quick search" technique is clearly not the best way to search rolls. It is a method I use when I'm pressed for time. Anything that looks new, silvery, thick (like proofs) or the slightest bit unusual gets removed for further inspection. Still, I've pulled both 1987s from circulation and would have found neither using the edge method. I had to check each coin.

I've never found a Barber in a roll. Franklins? Maybe 30 or so in 2½ years. Walkers? About 5. I'm still waiting for a Barber.....and waiting.....

I got $23 in halves today and when i looked at them in the car, since i heard some silver when the teller was counting them out, I checked the edges of them. I found 4 silvers:

    1964 first I've ever found
    1965 first I've ever found
    1966 first I've ever found
    and a 1969D

Tomorrow i'll check them for more, but i just didn't feel like looking at them tonight.

When i went to the bank that i normally get halves from, the teller asked me if I could buy the rest of the bag. She said it was easier so they didn't have to recount them at the end of the day. So now i need to scrap up $555 to buy the bag. After I get the bag, hopefully they'll order me boxes of halves.

I'm getting $20 in pennies for tomorrow. I'm in the mood to try to get some early wheat cents :)

I finished looking at the $23 in halves and i got:

    1964
    1969D (2)
    1966
    1965

I didn't get any more to fill the hole in my folders, hopefully a lot of nice things will come out of the $555 bag that I'm going to pick up on Tuesday.

$80 in nickels this week. (They ran out of boxes. I hope I'm not to blame, LOL).

    5 Euro Cent (Italy)

    George VI:
    1937 (dot)
    1947
    1950

    QEII:
    1955
    1957
    several 1960-62 (12-sided)

I also found a 1966 that I swear must be a circulated proof. I've searched over $1500 in nickles so far, and never had one stand out like this one. If I can ever figure out how to take a decent picture, I'll certainly post it for some opinions.]

I also got about $20 face worth of pure nickel nickles (pretty good percentage this time), and I only got about a dozen Jeffersons out of the entire batch. I'd search more if I only had a convenient way to return them, rather than having to reroll them all and deposit them. It's bad enough I can only give rolls of coins to a bank where I have an account!

I just finished looking through 4 boxes in halfs (100 pounds worth) and here are my results:

    1 - 64d
    5 - 65
    3 - 66
    15 -67
    9 -68
    7 -69

    73s
    73s
    72s

    06d
    04d
    02d
    02d

ok finds, I guess,, what are the 40% silvers going for these days?

so far I have about 3 pounds in 40 percents
and about a pound in 100 percents..

the 40% have $1.94 in silver in them, they will probably sell for about $1.50 and the 90% have $4.73 of silver in them, which could probably sell for $4.50.

I don't know how you guys do it. Just went through $300 of halves and all I got was 31 76's. Not very good. It shouldn't matter that they where from a credit union, money is money, right? Need to find some to keep the intrest level up.

Oh I guess I should include that I found a car wash token from the local car wash in one of the rolls, so I guess I actually lost fifty cents.
