    Copper Values

I came across a young man in town who told me his dad took in a barrel full of pennies for their copper value. Asking if they still had the barrel of pennies I asked what they were going to do with them. Melt them down for the copper was the reply. I thought that was against the law to do. Does any body know if this is ture or not?

There is a temporary order from the mint that no copper-based coinage can be melted down. That won't last forever, though, so I'm expecting that to be repealed sometime in the next 3-4 years.

$260 from my local credit union was a pretty solid deal... 1 '64, and 5 40%'s... better than I've done anywhere else so far.

10gary22: I'm thinking someone tossed in the strays as a joke! And to perhaps annoy folks who would try to sell the rolls on ebay.

The credit union (CU) once offered me a bag of coins but I declined because I would probably get the same coins that I fed into their coin machine a couple days ago! The CU says they get their coin boxes from the "Fed". These aren't String & Son rolls, at least they aren't marked as such. Actually, they have no company name or identification, just the same generic red striped rolls. The box has no id, either.

So today me and my girlfriend went to maybe 15 or so banks to ask if they had any half dollars. most said no but out of all the banks we found about 3-4 rolls of half dollars. Out of those rolls we found a 1967 and 2 1969 D half dollars. We then picked up $600 dollars in dimes and found a 1957, 1962, and 1964. They were in the clear shrink wrap so it was pretty easy to spot the silver ones. Also do you guys pick up coins from the same bank every time? Also do you drop off all the coins you don't want at the same bank every time to? I just want to say coin searching is very addicting. Me and my girlfriend have had incredible luck the past few days, since Saturday we have found 22 silver half dollars and 6 silver dimes. :smile

Kind of makes you wonder how rare some of them are going to become ? A lot of varieties have been listed that were not generally known before, so I imagine that many hoards have not been thoroughly searched. 45 years ago, a coin dealer told me to invest in Cents. He said with every new year there would be a few hundred collections added and a few thousand "I kinda want to" collections that consume the rarer coins. Guess he might have been right ? LOL I wish I would have listened.:crying:

Just went through $40 in quarters and found my first 1964 coin. It's pretty rough, but I think I'll keep it!

The Log Cabin is LP1 (lincoln penny one)
The Rail Splitter one (him on log with book) is LP2
Him in front of the Senate is LP3
And the capitol building is LP4 (lowest mintage)

I did find a few from last decade that were supposedly only in sets. I guess I'm just jaded today!

Thank you for this clear explanation. I was wondering why I have only seen one LP4 during all my bag & roll searching.

Thanks. I have pulled one of each D mint while roll searching and set them in flips. Now I can label them properly. I did notice that I went through a lot of rolls before I even saw a Capitol Building (LP4), much less one that appeared UNC.

    Thanks again.

Figured I'd tell you their "official" names.
    LP1- Birthplace Cent
    LP2- Formative Years Cent
    LP3- Proffesional Life Cent
    LP4- Presidency Cent

Should've put that earlier but the names of the middle two were escaping me.... :goofer:
