So, a new bank opened near my house. I called and asked if they have a coin machine that accepts halves, they said yes. So I went in and opened an account depositing the minimum deposit in an account has no annual fee. I use that as my "dump bank" and look around to other banks for nickels, halves, etc. Now, as stated above, I found a bank that will order boxes for me so I'll pick up there and dump at the other.

I confess that I repackage almost all my rolls (including MWRs) back into their original packaging. And I have to tape shut the carefully opened end of the MWR because the unrolled end really doesn't stay folded. I also put a small "X" on all re-rolls so I won't get them back.

When I first moved to Springfield the bank I WAS doing business with declined to order coins for me. I simply moved all 6 accounts from them to a bank that would. Another way is to find out which bank in your area will order coins for you and simply open up a checking or savings account with them, you are now a client and they SHOULD do as you request.

Was at a bank branch that I've never frequented before. Although I've had an account for years, I've just never been to the branch. This branch had a coin sorting/counting machine behind the counter. Playing dumb, I asked if it takes halfs. "Yeah," says the teller, "there is a bag for each type of coin." I ask if I can buy the whole bag. He responds that no known has ever asked, and no one really puts halfs into the machine. He checked with the head teller, who came up with a plan to account for it. They ran the machine report and said there was $674.

    Done!

Got some weird looks walking out the store with the machine back.

Came away with 42 x 40%, 18 x 90% (including a 1900 Barber), 1 x 1990-s, a 1966 Canadian 50c piece, 1922 British Penny, a handful of other random foreign coins. Slight overcount from the machine (so I got charged more), but the silver more than made up for it.

What kind of banks have these machines?what bank did you go to I've never seen one before In one.

It was a local credit union. They actually have a lousy coin policy. They accept coins for deposit, but charge a 5% fee regardless of whether the coins are rolled or loose. All coins have to go into the machine. (So, if the coins are rolled, they open all the rolls and run the coins into the machine.) The machine is behind the teller counter, so customers don't have access to it.

It was total pie-in-the-sky that they sold me the bag. I think they were just so confused at my request, that they accommodated. I would wait at least a year before asking again.
