The reason why the 1909 Lincoln is not an S or S VDB.
Mint marks are generally very pronounced. Even on heavily circulated coins, it's still easy to see the mint mark. Your corroded coin would have a raised area, with patina and crud in the crevices and your coin is flat in the area of the mint mark.
Of course what I like to do is use magnification and a VERY strong light source,
move the coin around. If there is a faint MM you will see it.

    Great finds there Potty Dollar.

Once in a while Meow will find one dime in a roll of pennies. But to have all of them, is quite the score. Any silvers in them?

Didn't get much from my run of nickels - maybe one or two keepers per roll and nothing awesome. But it seems that I will have some fully capable helpers soon... my older guy (3 1/2) can already roll coins about as quickly as I can search and count them. And, in the name of always impressing me, my younger guy (21mos) can put coins in wrappers too. KIMG1365.JPG

I've been successful before, but it's more miss than hit. But, I keep trying from time to time.

I had a similar find some 10 years ago wherein a roll of cents contained 58 dimes. I determined it was likely done by someone with major memory problems, was dyslexic, or was otherwise visually impaired.
