Yes, I love spending the halves. I get cool comments all the time. But, if you can find a bank with a coin counter, that is the way to go.

About a year ago, my wife went to the bank to get several rolls of coins to use for change at my kid's school's book fair that she was working at. She opened up two rolls of mercury dimes and a couple of 90% quarter rolls, called me at work and asked me if these were worth anything? I told her to keep them all, looked them up and found out they are all worth 10-12x face (all circulated common dates).

A couple of years before that, my electrician was up in my attic and found two rolls of 90% quarters hiding under the fiberglass insulation. Thankfully, he's an honest guy and gave them to me.

So with a few rolls of silver sitting on my desk, I started searching around the internet and resumed my childhood hobby of collecting coins (started in the 1970's by searching rolls of pennies for wheats). Now that I've got more money to spend than when I was a kid, I'm collecting coins I used to dream of!

The owner went to the bank the other day and got some change for the drawer. After he came back, I started to look at the rolls. They cent rolls were the standard clear plastic junk except for two customer wrapped rolls. I check them out and this is what I found:

First roll : All 1956D and a few 1956 mixed in.
Second roll (the good one): 1919, 1930, 1935,1936, 1937D,1940,1941,1942,1942D,1944,1944D,1945,1946D,1947D,1949D,1950,
1950D,1950S,1951D,1952D,1955D.1956D,1957D and 1958D

There were a few duplicates in the second roll, but the bad thing is that all of the second roll are badly toned from what I assume is high heat. Their condition other than that is fairly good.

 

Nice Lincoln finds.

Searched a box of halves: Nothing
Found $15 of loose halves at the bank: 2 40%ers.

1992 S Half

I went back through $200 in halves that my kids searched first and found this 1992 S that looks like it has been sandblasted or something. Is there any value in this?

 

Possible a Grease Struck thru error...but hard to tell from the pict.

 

See if this image is any better.

 

Possible some kind of environmental damage still worth 50c.

About a roll worth of 1939 oldest to 1959

I Have 3 Sets so am not looking to fill any holes.. just wanted to see what kind of luck I may have with errors and such.. And I love the tone that can show on Jefferson's..
But after searching I just wonder why they thought they needed so many of these coins in 1964?

So many nickels were produced in 1964 since the mint was switching over plachets that most nickels made in 1964,1965 and 1966 were dated 1964 which is why so many are in circulation today.

Half searching has really gone in the crapper lately.

Another whole box, plus $65.50 in loose and customer rolls. The only thing worth keeping (arguably) was a 2006-P.

Had better luck with a box of nickels.

40d, 41, 44p, 45s, 49, 53, 53d, 53s, 56,2x56d, 57, 2x57d, 3x59d

Always happy to find a buffalo...have had good luck with that. In 10 boxes, I have found 5 buffaloes, 17 silvers, and 2 Vs. Lucky searching...

Wish my luck was holding out that well on halves...four consecutive shutout boxes.

 

Did another box of halves yesterday.....no silver.
I did find a 2006 which was quite worn so I'm not keeping. I also found a 1978-s proof which I am keeping

I also visited a couple of banks and found 11 bucks of loose halves with 2 40%ers so I wasn't shut out for the day.

3 rolls of nickels, and I found only one old date, a 1959.

I'll get another box tomorrow....

Yesterday I bought $5.00 in cents, $10.00 in nickels, and $15.00 in dimes mainly just to revisit a hobby from childhood, and get some blue books started.
I saved the nickels for last and I'm about 95% sure I just found a 1939 Doubled Five Cent/Monticello. I don't have access to a scanner at the moment but will post scans tomorrow from work

edit: False alarm; just did some more research and its not a doubled.
