$2s are a little weird when it comes to currency. Their series are much more sporadic than other values. For example, between 1976 and 2013, $1's have had like 20 different series while $2s have had just 1976, 1995, 2003, 2003A, 2009.

Thanks for that, Lon... I've never been much into paper money and was kind of just winging it with my post to the best of my memory.

Banks need to check their penny rolls...I've been getting Euros, Canadians and just last week I got a coin from India.

Are they fed or customer rolls?

The term "Uncirculated" is the most misunderstood one in collecting for new collectors.

In a nutshell, the term "uncirculated" refers to the condition of a coin, or its state of preservation, rather than where it's actually been.

Here's an example which should make things very easy to understand. Let's say your local grocery store just got a box of new rolls of 2016-D pennies (cents) from their local bank (which came via their carrier straight from the mint). They hand some out to their checkers... As a shopper, you get one of the brand new coins the checker gives you in change... the coin is still in the same "uncirculated" condition as it was when it was made, unless you handle it with your hands, instead of by the edges.

Coins become circulated because they are handled by their surfaces and not their edges... theorhetically, a coin could be handled by 100 people and remain "uncirculated' if they all handled it by the edges, preventing it from wear.

So, I work at the library. I am friends with most there so the person who handles the money. She saves me what she thinks is old. Mostly wheat backs, 3 un-noteworthy SBA's and 1 or two wheats, but today she came to me with 14 wheats! One of them was a polished, bent 1920! The rest were common 1950/40's. I love my coworkers.

$20 loose halves from several banks: 1 NIFC (2003-D)

    $8 MWR nickels - 1941, 1948, 1955-D, 1958-D, 1959-D (all from the same roll)

$15 MWR dimes - AU-looking 1968-D (no silver, proofs, or foreigns)

$5 CWR pennies - skunk. Wide variety of dates but not a single coin from before 1972. Not even a sad, banged up 1964 or anything. Weird. Plus a few common date, circulated Canadians.

Thank you so much. Great explanation and example. I think I finally understand. (at least about "uncirculated" -- Just got my grading book in, so I am hoping that helps to shed some more light. )

The AU rating, About Uncirculated, is also a tricky one. I've found that this rating gets looser with older coins. At some point, reality steps in and all of the collectors acknowledge that really old coins from that year were all circulated at some point, so they start calling what otherwise would be a worn coin AU. You're just not going to find 150+ year old coins in superior condition.

Unless you find some buried treasure... :)

Box of halves from the bank and $30.00 of BWR. Nothing. Going to try and do 7 boxes this week. My girlfriend is doing 5 and wants me to get her one too. Can't say no to her.

Lovely as that coin is, there is still some wear. Compare it to a 2016 coin. <shrugs>

Just finished another box of BWR Nickels. Really typical box. Nothing rare in it. No coins prior to 1960 in AU condition.

    (5) 1939, (3) 1940, 1941, 1942, 1946-D, (2) 1947, 1948, 1953, 1953-D, (4) 1954-D, 1954-S, (4) 1955-D, (2) 1956, (2) 1956-D, 1957-D, 1958-D, 2009-D.

    5 Canadians.

I tossed back some worn flat coins from the above list. I should probably be tossing ugly 1939's, but so far haven't tossed any of those.

The 1942 is in VG-XF condition, as was one of the 1956's. They may upgrade my B book. Will have to see another day, though, as my back is killing me now and I have to put coin hunting off for the rest of the day.

Blasted through 11 boxes from Loomis yesterday and today. I have 5 more boxes this week. Out of 11, 1 was a skunk. Finds this week so far were above average running about 1 40/90 per each 9 rolls. My running average had dropped significantly to 1 every 25 rolls. I've been blessed with some good boxes lately.

    44- 40s
    26- 90s
    17-'64 Kennedys
    7- Franklins
    2-Walkers

Found a 1981s, 1982s and a 1986 Special edition half, and a Goldie with a Santa stamp on it I'll post those later for fun.

Yes... probably 75 cents - $1 each per depending on how nice they are.
