about half of the halves were CWR, but everything else was loose. the gentlemen who brought the collection in were apparently informed to dump the coin at the bank and deposit the funds to the estate account. they brought in over $300 in coin, and a small stack of common dollar bills.

i asked the teller to inform them of the value of the coins they were dumping. she said they didn't care, that they were simply working on instructions.

i have actually talked people out of dumping old coins in the past. about 3 years ago, an old woman brought in a small sack of silver dollars to trade for cash. her concern at the time was that they were valueless, since silver dollars aren't circulated anymore. i informed her of their value, and instead of leaving them at the bank, she ended up taking them to a dealer.

I was walking to the store the other day and I saw a bag of coins on the ground. when I looked through I realized in must of been some coinstar rejects that someone threw away. there was a dozen euro cents and some damaged penny's. then I saw it a coin a never saw before it was a one quarter anna from India and the date was 1889!!! I was stunned!!! 1889 r.jpg 1889.jpg 1889 r.jpg

    Box of BWR Cents: 30, 40, 41, 42, 45, 46, 55-D, 56-D (x3), 57-D (x2), +528 copper cents.

$52 CWR nickels: Every single roll was filled with a single year of "westward journey" nickels pulled from circulation. I've gotten solid BWR rolls before, but this was a first for CWRs.

$100 CWR Dimes: '64 from the 19th roll. Made my day.

So this week didn't give me all the cool stuff that last week did but it was still pretty good:

95 Wheats (oldest: 1910x2) including a few nice red and red/browns.
    3 pre 60 Canadians (40, 46, 58)
    1980 CUD over "TRUST"
    1998 WAM (29th)
    2009 DDR-009
and a wheat of unknown date - it looks like 1914 if you squint your eyes and angle it just so... :)

@furryfrog: i'm having a similar day with cents. the following is from the same dump i recovered the silver from over the weekend. i ended up buying a $50 bag of cents off the coin counter to take home and sort, because i thumbed through the bag for a few minutes and found:

    1899 indian head cent
    1912 austria 2 heller
    1933 canada cent
and a couple hundred wheats, mostly from the 1930's and earlier

there's still another bag of cents, as well as one each of nickels, dimes, and quarters to go through. gonna be a busy sorting week!

2 Boxes of Halves - Skunk & Skunk.

Did score a roll of 2014's from a teller drawer that I traded for face value plus a couple of silver dimes.

    I think that's a 1909s VDB

If you are looking for a bargain basement 09S VDB then I may be able to help you out ;) You just need to squint your eyes hard, tilt your head to the left, stand on your right foot and hop up and down while looking at the coin....It's better in person...lol

I tried looking for a "VDB" but obviously can't find any.
I think I'd rather not know than know it was something like that!

Picked up my first roll of nickels and found about 10-15 pre 1960s, a couple of upgrades for my album of some random dates, and 1 buffalo nickel. Also found a mercury dime out of a roll of dimes that went into my register about 2 weeks ago.

Im addicted to nickels now though. I tried a box of pennies but im bored with plain old wheaties. I ordered another box of nickels today.

    Here we go...........

Best of luck to you. I like nickel boxes since they have a wide variety of stuff to find. Lately though, I have been getting crapped on with them. Hopefully you have better luck than me :)

I figure its still the best for silver with everyone searching halves for it, and you can still find early issues and just fun stuff in general. Plus with them being a little thicker I can flip them over easier than the Lincolns.

Ill probably continue with a box per week for awhile. Got to find a place to dump though. I calculated that if I bought wrappers off of ebay I would still be spending the same as if I dumped them in a coinstar (figuring in the price of the wrappers shipped + time involved).

I thought coinstar was free with a gift certificate, but they only let you choose certain ones and dont offer an option for a store voucher at my walmart. I was thinking I could just get a voucher to buy my groceries with and not lose any money but as it stands im gonna lose $10 on a hundred. What to do, what to do.

Do you have any credit unions around you? I belong to 2 and both have coin machines that are free for members. Bonus, they don't charge for accounts like the big banks. I order from one CU and dump on the other CU.
If you have to roll, you could just re-use the wrappers you get the coins in.
