We only have 2 drawers but I try to look at every coin in the drawers and whatever coins the customers spend.

Got word from a new bank today that they would allow me to order and pick-up boxes at their bank...for $0.10 per roll. That would mean $5 per box. They said that I could order up to 6 per week. Or, they said that I could open a "Business Account" and the coins would be free. Oh yeah...the Business Account would cost $50/month. Urg. I'll keep looking.

Tabor, are you in a city or a small town? Are the national banks like Wells Fargo, Bank of America, etc in your area? Also, ideally, how many boxes do you intend to order and how often do you plan on ordering them?

This could be an interesting roll. Just got a box of cents from the bank!

I live in a city of nearly 18,000. There are no national banks such as those you mentioned. I just counted and there are 7 different banks in my city (with multiple branches spread throughout the city). Since I started CRH, I have been accepted and then refused at 4 of them. I have three others to check but it's frustrating. I was going strong for over a year with a good supplier and now everything has stopped. I had a goal of 500 silvers for 2013 and now I have no supplier and I'm stuck at 432. I know that there are worse things in life but it stinks that this great hobby has hit a standstill for me.

It could be interesting but keep in mind, that is an obverse of a Canadian penny dated between 1990-2003. It's not too old.

Very true but seeing this means that the box hasn't been fully checked. And to a begining collector like myself anything out of the ordinary of a typical 1959 or later penny is pretty cool. Even if it is just from another country! :)

That stinks that four of them have turned you down and that there are no big chains in your area. My suggestion probably won't help you achieve the goal for the year, but it may help out in the long run. Provided they don't have any crazy fees for having an account, I would open an account at whichever of the last three banks has the most branches in your area. I know for some people it has worked to tell the bank in advance what you want to do, ordering boxes, but I also know a lot of banks don't like it so I would not tell them. Once you open the account, I would not start ordering boxes right away, but stop by each branch once maybe twice a week and ask for some rolls (no more than 10-20 rolls at a time). After about a month or so, once the tellers are used to you coming in, then I would place an order for a box (only one or two boxes). I would try this at each branch, but only order at one branch per week. I would do that for a few months and see how it works. If they seem fine with that, then you can try to up your orders if you want.

This seems to work okay for me. 3 of the 5 banks in my area haven't given my any issues ordering boxes, so I just try not to over due it with them. In my opinion though, your biggest obstacle is not having any big chains in your area. The smaller banks may all charge fees.

Hopefully this helps a little. Regardless of what you do, best of luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

    Found 2 odd halves tonight. A "gold-plated" 1979 and a 1976-S that doesn't look or sound like 40% silver.

    1) it doesn't really *look* like gold plating, so what is it?

    2) am I incorrect in thinking that all '76-s Kennedy halves were 40 % silver?

Not all 76-S are Silver. See Here: http://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/half-dollars/kennedy/

I think the Red Book says that a great many of the 40% were melted in the 1980s, but don't quote me on that.

That skinny Abe is very cool!

Do you think someone cut it in half, removed some metal, and glued it back together? I can't see it coming from the Mint like that...?
