1981 was the last full year, but in 1982 they started with both copper and zinc. Thus the 7 business strike Cents for that year. With the coins starting to show their age, they are easier to tell the difference. On the zinc ones watch for the bubbles and the copper cones are a different color.

5 rolls of nickels: 1 59, 1 51, 1 Canadian beaver 5 cent piece (my daughter loved it, gave it to her)
4 rolls of cents: 1 log cabin, 2 formative
    1 box of halves: zip

boxes of halves have been very dry lately for me......1 40% in my last 11 boxes (though I found some silver halves in loose change at the bank).....not sure how productive this is.........

I finally found a new 2009-D Lincoln birthplace cent. Took long enough. This is the longest that I've had to wait to find a year's new cent.

  10. I did my first EVER roll of half dollars today...Most of them were beat up badly, it looks like they went through a weed-whacker several times. The bad ones all had no reeding left, either. There are several casinos in very close distance, I am thinking they may use them. I am within a days drive of Atlantic City, Mohegan Sun, Yonkers, and at least a few more I can't recall the names of.

BUT....one coin in there made the whole roll. It's a 1974, and it's an error! It appears to be a large grease-strike, and there is a large, smooth indent right in front of Kennedy's ear (part of same is missing) and going up into his hair. It made my day.

Oddly enough, the coins were either early 70s or 90s. There was not a single coin in the roll from the 1980s. The newest was 1997. 71 was the oldest, there were two. Also, two Bi Centennials, both P and D mints.

The only date I needed for my collection was 1991 P but it is one of the worst from the roll. So the search continues....It surprises me that that was the only one I did not have, as Half dollars are the coins I have the least of, modern clad era anyway. I am missing 23 date/mintmark combinations in the clad era alone and it was 24 this morning. I was hoping for better luck on the first roll.

I believe I got two upgrades for coins I already had, however, one of which being 1980 P, there were two in the roll and one of them is about uncirculated :)

I know it's not as impressive as some people, but for me this was a very good day!

    What does "clad" mean?

I saw some of the coins you guys found are "clad" but I am new and do not know what that means...

    Thanks!

Clad means worth less than a VD

A recession full of money: The only thing I've found for a minute is mean bank tellers...You think they would be happy to be employed. A few bad deals on eBay...and a pawn shop that pays 22 cents on the gram for starling. (BTW... I will think about giving you money at...20 cents a gram 500lb max!, not troy 16 ounce lb:rolling:) lol. I hope everyone hear has had an amazing summer and happy hunting!

Question. What is the etiquette when you believe that the teller would suffer irrepressible harm,to their person, if they carried 3 boxes of any coin let alone half dollars. Is age discrimination a factor in ur purchasing:confused:

    Erin:
After the use of silver ended (in 1964-- last year) the mint started using a 'clad' composition.
The outer layers are copper-nickel (.750 copper and .250 nickel) bonded to an inner core of pure copper.

Check out the Red Book (Guide Book of US Coins) for more info.

    Welcome to the gang.
