Just getting started 1 good 1 bad and a question

Well, I guess it is beginner's luck. My sister works at a Walmart in the cash office. I was talking to her about some of the info I was reading on here with respect to half dollars. She mentioned that an older gentleman had payed with two rolls of halves last weekend and she thought it was unusual so she bought them and brought them home. One was mixed 1971-2000 half dollars. The other contained 10 1967 and 10 1968 halves. From what I gather on here, we got lucky. She used to work in a bank, too bad she does not anymore hahaha.

Now my question: How does "toning" effect coin value? All the 67's and 68's are yellowish. Does this hurt or help value? SHould you keep "silver" coins in airtights or let them age?

    Thanks!

Toning won't really effect the value if they are circulated. No need for airtites, but nice find!

Box of half dollars.......Zero silver. 7th box in a row without a silver coin. Found a couple of interesting halves though, and will post pics later.

Came across this nickel, dark grey color, diagonal lines running across front and back, and light toning on reverse. Can anyone tell me what causes this?

The line you are seeing are the way the planchett was before it was pressed, just a lower quality planchett

My situation exactly. The 09 cents have dried up and no 09 dimes or nickels any where to be found.

Well, I just finished off a roll of halves. I found

    11- 2001P
    3 - 40% 1969P
    1 - 40% 1967
1 - 1972 that I am not sure of the metal composition. It is a very rough coin, but there appears to be no copper when viewing the coin from the side. The ridges on the edge of the coin are pretty smashed down from circulation, so maybe I just cannot see it.

The 2001P's weren't issued for circulation, but I have found several. Are they worth holding on to? There were about 21.2 million of them minted.

I also found 121 Bicentennials. Initially when I first started roll searching I was holding on to these, but they minted over 500 million of them. My searches have yield over 10% of the coins being bicentennials. Now I think I'll just keep a few of the nicest ones I find and cash in the rest.

Yes, roll searching you find gobs and gobs of the bicentennials. I have kept only 1 or 2 that were in fantastic shape and turn in the rest.

Congrats on finding 4 40%ers. I have a string of 7 boxes without a single silver :headbang:

This is my first whole box. I've done a couple half boxes before with no big finds.
