    UNC,
You're killing it lately. Any modern proof is 90% silver (if in fact it's silver) so you did even better than you thought.

Why do so many people like this? He just got 4 skunk boxes of coin, that is not likeable IMHO. I hope you have better luck on your next batch that comes in for you.

Keep hammering, UNC, you're getting some great boxes right now.

coinsrus, no need to post your crap on YT, you're just drawing in more competition. Not that you seem intelligent enough to understand that... but I've seen on other forums that about 1/3 of modern-day roll searchers found the hobby through YT...

    NOS:
You may want to consider selling the solid pre-82 rolls on e-bay as they go for a premium due to the copper content. If the small hassle is worth it to you, you will make money on the deal.

    Yesterday I did minimal searching:
    10 rolls of dimes: nothing
    10 rolls of nickels: nada
4 rolls of cents: 3 wheaties including a (very ugly) 1920. It was nice to find one that old :)

    500 boxes searched....BAD trend

I have recently searched my 500th box of halves. I started in June 2009, so my average is 2.96 boxes per week. Some stats are in order:

Total silver halves found (in boxes only): 1508 (316 90%ers for 20.95% of the total, and 1192 40%ers)
Average silver coins per box: 3.02

Adding my loose/CWR/BWR (less than a box) finds (I've searched an approximate $23,785 worth in addition to the 500 boxes), I have found:
Total: 2556 silver half dollars with 18.94% of them being the 90% variety.
Average silver coins found per box equivilent of the loose/CWR/BWR less than: 22.01

    Disturbing Trend

Average coins per box on first hundred boxes: 3.40
    Average per 2nd hundred: 3.33
    Average per 3rd hundred: 3.44
    Average per 4th hundred: 2.84
    Average per 5th hundred: 2.09

As you can see, it was very consistent for the first 300 boxes. And now, a SIGNIFICANT downward trend (2.09 is about 38.5% less than 3.4 which is what I averaged over the first 300 boxes). To take it further, my last 50 boxes searched yielded 28 skunks and an average of 0.94 silvers per....LESS THAN ONE PER BOX! When I get a box now, I assume it will be a skunk and the fun of it has diminished considerably. :(

I know some (UNC WALKER) are still having great success, but for those who thought that it was slowing down.......it is at least in Houston as these statistics proove.

So many people are doing this now. Big, big competition. And, the run up of the spot price on silver has raised the consiousness of the public to posible silver coins as well.

    What a bummer....

On the bright side, I'm less than 5 oz away from finding 500 oz of silver from circulation. :)

    Bob,
I like the post (and the effort) but not the decline in the amount of silver you are finding from boxes. I went through a 3 month streak and it was at least 50 boxes with terrible results like that. Competition sucks and the higher silver prices will make more poeple aware of the silver they could cash in at face or cash in at a pawn shor for more paper dollars.

That sucks, Bobbeth. Hopefully you hit a hot streak and it boosts your numbers... but I'll agree that numbers are pulling back, averaged out. Too many people out there doing 40-50+ boxes a week. Greed will ruin it for us all.

Yes.....the guys doing so many boxes per week catches up to all of us. My best 4 banks (with regard to results), don't order anymore because so many in the area were getting multiple boxes per week, then getting angry when they couldn't get their 4 or 5 boxes. It costs the bank $ for each box they order! FadeToBlack, "Greed will ruin it for us all" is the quote of the week!

I'm looking forward to seeing what a certain individual who lives in central NJ does when he gets cut off. He's doing about 50-60 a week and plans to up it to 100 this winter. I know most banks around here don't have an appetite for that crap... PNC though, is one of my pickup banks, and that's who he uses for most of his pickups. So if they cut him off, I'll probably get cut off too. Really irritates me. There's someone out in Cali in the bay area doing 100 boxes a week year round, another person in Arkansas who does about 70 boxes a week, and then I know of someone in Minnesota who does 40 week... It's just ridiculous how greedy some of these people are. I'd do max 15 boxes a week and I think that's a ton. I'd be using 5 banks to order, probably... I mean, it's just nonsensical to do that kind of volume.

HOW and WHERE in the world do you dump that many halves?????

  16. FadeToBlack

    FadeToBlack New Member

He apparently dumps $10k a week in Atlantic City (Casino's) and the rest goes to TD bank in bags, which are exchanged for cash. No clue how he talked them into taking $20k+ a week in halves without any fees. I know he owns his own painting business, he's a subcontractor. My guess is he has a business account and it's processed as a business account transaction.

Wow. I could see that turn into an IRS NIGHTMARE.

Or ..lol.. a Secret Service inquiry......

If he's just exchanging change for cash, it's not a major issue, although it is effectively money laundering. Then again, we all commit money laundering. We just happen to make money doing it, unalike most launderers.

You don't technically have to do anything wrong for an IRS nightmare to occur.

Business owner + changing out large amounts of "cash" + Atlantic City = IRS "inquiry" HE double hockey sticks
