also, ALL S mint mark have been proofs at one time, right? i've found probably at least 25 of them in my pre-1982 findings. will search post-82 if that's the case

During 1969-1974 S mint marks were also minted for circulation I believe. However, they still have a small premium above other mints for the same years if in really good condition.

    Sorted $500 this week

137 wheats, 3 of them in the teens. The rest in the 40's & 50's
    Roughly $100 of coppers
    1999-S proof penny
    2000-S proof penny
    38 canadian cents
    7 dimes
    Hong Kong 20 cent
    Australian 5 cent
    Philipines 25 cent
    Philipines 10 cent
    Malaysian 1 Sen

A bit low on the wheats, should have been at least 200 of them. Too bad there wasn't really anything in the 20s or 30s.

Yeah, sorting a lot is a serious money drain. Plus you tend to miss out on the error coins because you dont have time to examine all the zincs.

I normally do $300 or so a week, but fell behind and needed to catch up this particular week. The proofs were a surprising find though. First time I got those, and I've sorted a couple thousand dollars already this year.

One time I picked up about 30 customer wrapped rolls, and they had lots of wheat pennies, it had 4 indian heads and a 1922-D (lots of these coins were polished unfortunately). Just shows that you dont need to sort big to find big.

i found about 5 banks that will help me out (since i'm just beginning) with NO fees, coins going in or out. i just pay face for the box .... can even take it back to same bank if i wanted, wouldn't have a fee for them taking back the coins .... and i DON'T have an account with them.

FWIW, I think customer wrapped rolls have a greater chance of hitting upon jackpots than the bank boxes. I've noticed that the occurence of hitting older memorials & wheats is higher.

Curious, do you keep all the "coppers" too? If so, how and where? That seems like a lot to keep. I keep Wheats, but the copper memorials I keep only if in really good condition.

WOW! Finding proof pennies? I guess somebody cracked open their proof sets, to fill their penny rolls! :D
    Congrats on the finds :)

See I don't even keep them!
    Should I be keeping them?

Naive question: you search 50,000 pennies in a week ?!?! How long does that take! All by hand? Do your back or eyes ever betray you?

    Wow!

    This week's finds.

So i searched 2 boxes of halves this week. It is amazing what you can find out there. The 2 boxes were very different in what they contained.
In the first box, i was very happy to find 11 40% halves. I consider that a "good box". If i find any 1964 Kennedy halves, that's a "great" box.
The second box only had 1 1968 half, but i finally found my 1st 1987-P. I also found a 2006-D and a 1972-S proof. But the stunner was a 1986-S proof (impaired of course) Statue of Liberty Commerative half dollar. Needless to say i was excited to find this, but a little sad, because either someone was forced to spend it, or had their collection stolen.
On a different note, went into one of my local banks that usually doesn't have much and asked for half dollars. The teller in the next window said she had 2, so i bought them. I could see the white edge and hear the ring of silver when she put them down on the glass, but the real surprise was when i looked down at a 1945-S Walking Liberty! It was only in Fine condition, but still! I've never found one in rolls, but have found 2 just sitting in tellers' trays.
Like i said, it's amazing what is out there if you just look and ask.

Yeah, and it is amazing when that teller says nope, don't have any... LOL
Asking, and getting or two totally different things :)
I wish it was just that easy! :)
    Nice finds!!!! :)

    Tmoneyeagles,
I know what you mean. I have banks that i don't even bother going into anymore. The tellers are either not very nice, or they buy all of the good stuff themselves. Not that i blame them, i would if i was in their position. I call these banks "cold" or "dead".
On another note, i noticed a few banks around me that won't even help me with my request because i don't have an account with them. They cite the Patriot Act as their reason. I don't know if it is true or not, but i'm not going to argue with them or even try. I'll just never open an account there or reccomend them to family or friends.

great finds....I just asked my teller about getting halves, he is checking to even see if they will do it for me....

Yep, because of my age, banks won't help me!
They will not even walk up to the counter, once they see me!
I only have three banks I can use, I buy stuff from one, turn it into the other, and I rarely use the other one, because they have never had anything good, but I might start trying again! LOL
A lot of banks, just won't check or anything, they will just say no...

Both were impaired somewhat. One has scratches on the face, the other has a fat fingerprint on the reverse. Interesting find, but probably not worth much at all.

I keep all the coppers. The metal content is worth more than the face values, and there are people willing to buy them separated out, notably on ebay. But its a small market because the price of copper is too low to draw most sellers & buyers and because the melt prohibition is still in effect. Right now, they might sell for something like 1.5 - 1.8x face on ebay.

I sort by machine. Usually I sort $300/week and usually dont look through the zincs for errors at all. That might mean $60/week that I'm actually looking at. Some people dont even bother looking at the machine sorts, and just store them away. But I usually do to pull out the interesting items & look for errors.

Not much no, but I'd sure be excited if I found a PROOF anything in change, a roll, or the whole box! THAT IS QUITE THE FIND!!!
