Two boxes of halves: Skunk and skunkier

Back to the normal flat boxes, though.

Here's the very special surprise, a 1922 Ulysses S. Grant commemorative! Found at a small local bank along with four common clad halves. The guys at the coin shop right across the street didn't believe me when I told them where I got it. Then they offered to buy it for thirty bucks. I'm glad I didn't fall for their generous offer!

Anyone have a guess on the grade?

Spectacular clorox! Red Book lists this coin at $130 AU-50. I know next to nothing about grading though, just throwing that out there, as that's the lowest grade listed in my '12 Red Book.

Btw, I got permission to metal detect an old home/hotel that Grant had stayed at on a few occasions. As far as I know this place was never detected before (spoke w/ the home owners), it's been in their family for 6 generations. I'll keep you posted. Congrats on that gorgeous find!

So you guys must still be getting some silver in boxes of halves ?

barely, I'd say about 90% of my boxes are skunks, and the other 10% have 4-10 silvers most of the time.

Nice find on that commem half.

And yeah, halves are pretty much dead. Some 40%ers are floating around that I assume are still in circulation because people only think to remove 1964 and earlier like the quarter and dime, but those are getting rarer now too.

I would guess that in a more rural area with no searchers you might luck out and find a box that's been sitting in a vault for a while, but by me it's just like pballer said, most of my boxes are solid clad with tons of searchers marks all over the coins.

Last week picked up $96 in IKES that a customer dropped off at a bank. Asked the teller if he brought anything else in and she said, YES!, he brought in $350 in halves. I got excited thinking if he had no use for the IKES maybe he cleaned out his safe and got rid of all his silver too. Well he didn't, he only got rid of $1.00 of 40%'s and $349 of Clad. Oh well, the thrill of the hunt was still exciting. Good luck to all!

Well I got skunked on my box. No silver. I looked at coins that appeared to be uncirculated from the edge reeding. I found a 2008 and a 2009, but not of much use to me.

If I'm going to get skunked 90% of the time, I'm done with this experiment. I can't dump lose halves anywhere, so I have to re-roll with the machine wrapped rolls. Few banks have coin counters and the one I did call to inquire said it doesn't take halves. I spent about a minute a roll, carefully opening one end with a small flatblade screwdriver then putting the coins back and taping that end shut.

I'd need to average better than one 90% per box or several 40% to continue this. I don't think that will happen buying boxes ?

So I'm going to dump these at another branch of the same bank and be done with it, then somebody else can get these same coins. I will ask for customer wrapped rolls in the future, but they are scarce.

No more ordering boxes for me.

My local coin dealer will sell me Ikes for face value, he just sends them to bank when he has $500 or so worth

DSC_0566-1.jpg DSC_0567-1.jpg DSC_0568-1.jpg So I went to the bank today picked up 2 boxes of halves and one of quarters and got this roll of SBA's from the teller today. I don't have an OBW roll of these dollars so I picked it up. Also my last search of $4K halves I got 7 40%'s and 2 64's.
