I have read all of the posts here, and have made a simple conclusion. This is not the way to clean anything worth collecting. Does it p*$% people off? Apparenty! It bothers me when someone needlessly beats the snot out of a beautiful car I will never afford. They go and trade it in without mentioning a thing about the abuse it took. Is it wrong? In most people's opinion: YES. Illegal: Not unless the title is branded.
As for the tumbled coins; I'd say if you want to sell them, disclose it. I doubt the ANA would see this as acceptable or moral. Enough said.:smile

I would not say that. I post how if used properly you can bulk clean ancients with these using plastic pellets. If you try to clean them too throughly they will become too shiny and "soft" though. I also don't think doing the same to spending coinage you dig up and simply want to buy soda with is going to kill anyone.

I don't think either of those two uses anyone would declare unacceptable or immoral.

I know most here only deal with modern coins, but be careful saying absolutes regarding collecting, since by doing so you are including ancient collecting, which may have different thoughts on such subjects. :)

Btw I reiterate, if you use a rock tumbler to knock off surface dirt from coins, only use soft plastic pellets, (never rocks or steel bearings), do not put very many in at a time to avoid coin to coin contact, and do not leave them in so long that they become "shiny". Following those directions, using a rock tumbler is fine for the uses I have described.

I've heard that a wire brush on a drill will work wonders on shining up a coin!

The reason is that it is really at least 3 threads in context.

    1. About tumbling zero numismatic value, and damaged coins to a nicer appearance contrary to the "Never!" pundits.
    2. Discussion as to difference between modern coins and ancient coin techniques and needs.
    3. Ethical levels of selling such tumbler treated coins ( with or without advisement of treatment).

Some have only jumped in on one part, some have combined parts, some are trying to combine all 3 parts and should be confused. IMO.

    I will try to recap:

NEVER use a rock tumbler to make a coin "shiny" or on a coin in average condition. ONLY use it on dug coins that have debris attached to them, and they are not worth the expense of having them professionally conserved. This would include knocking dirt off face value circulating coinage to be able to spend, or knocking severe encrustations off of low grade ancient coins. Even in those applications care is needed, as is proper materials, to not overly clean a coin.

Since it will only be used in those situations, I do not believe disclosure is necessary. If you use it in any other situation, then the coin will be damaged, and if selling you need to disclose the damage the coin has, (like any other damage you should ethically disclose).

    Sound fair?

I guess you missed my point, and I did not specify I was speaking of modern coinage. I am clueless to ancients. If you want to clean up a bunch of wheaties and put them back into circulation, great! But, selling them at a premium is a kind of grey area, which I would avoid. But, you do what you want.

I think this thread has well served it's purpose and really does not need to be bumped just to begin a flame war again.
