[QUOTE="Ancientnoob, post: 2703009, member: 44140"]Hey folks - picked up another penny for a good price. This time it is of King John, made famous in life for being forced signing the Magna Carta in AD 1215, which through its evolution laid the framework for the modern Parliament. Imagination made him famous as the king in Robin Hood. Scarce Irish Coin Ireland. Dublin Kingdom of England (AD 1199-1216) Lord of Ireland (AD 1177-1199) John I Lackland AR Penny 18 mm x 1.43 grams Third Coinage Obverse: Crowned bust of John facing holding scepter, quadrafoil in right field all within a triangle - Legend around IOhA NNES RE X (King John) Reverse: Sun over Moon Stars in each corner, all within a triangle +ROBE+RDON+DIVE, + above each part of the legend ( Roberd of Dublin) ref: Spink 6228 Note: The Pennies of King John were minted while he was king of England and where made to standard English weight, and circulated as English Pennies. The main goal of this coinage was to drain Ireland of silver. The pennies of Ireland are the only pennies that name King John, their English counterparts retained "Henry."
