That's no fun. I've never encountered any river god in this professional and full position of swimming as on this coin reverse. It was struck under Alexander Severus in Antioch ad Orontem. River god Orontes seems even moving his legs to push forward in swimming. Tyche, as usual is there in this famous series. Coin weighs 16.28 g. Watch.. Please.
Nice! I have a similar one from Elagabalus. I love the feel of them in the hand... So big! And the reverse is so busy with things going on! Love it! My river god isn't as swimmy as yours.
here's a small coin with Orontes, but no waves Anonymous pagan civic coinage ca. A.D. 312 Æ quarter nummus 14x15mm 1.8gm GENIO ANTIOCHENI; Statue of the Tyche of Antioch on rock, below the river god Orontes. APOLLONI SANCTO; Apollo, stg.l. holding patera and lyre, in right field I In ex. SMA Mint of Antioch Vagi 2954; Van Heesch 3a
This one has no waves either. Autonomous, Yes.. But it's thought that these issues were struck under the consent of Maximinus II. The latter was later attacked by Constantine the Great.
Rhine River God just ate, waiting an hour before swimming: Gallic Empire Antoninianus Postumus (260 A.D.) Trier Mint, 1st Emis., 2nd Ph. IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed right / SALVS PROVINCIARVM, river god Rhine, horns on head, reclining left, elbow on urn, hand on prow, holding anchor. RIC 87; RSC 355; Sear 10990. (2.78 grams / 24 x 21 mm)
@VC.. That's right. By that time as well, Maximinus II was accused by Constantine of secretly approving the massacres against the Christians in Antioch at that period. His fate was the same as Maxentius. I meant to reveal in what circumstances those issues were struck.
Here's a River god! He has to stay out of the water for at least 30 minutes because he just pigged out and ate all of his cornucopia contents.
