A few nights ago, I reunited two coins from the Reinhold Faelton Collection. The resulting plates were mixed-quality but mostly poor, making it an arduous task to use this catalogue for provenance matching. I bought my first Faelton Collection coin about three years ago. That coin, an AR Denarius of Marc Antony, is below with its Faelton Collection catalogue photo. Fortunately, Andrew McCabe previously identified it as Faelton, because I'm not certain I'd have noticed it based on the catalogue photo below. Rome, The Imperators. Marcus Antonius, 32 BCE. AR Denarius (3.72g; 18mm). Athens Mint. Obv: ANTON AVG IMP III COS DES III III V R P C. Bare head of Antony facing right. Rev: ANTONIVS AVG IMP III, in two lines. References: Crawford 542/2; HCRI 347; Sydenham 1209. Provenance: Ex Andrew McCabe Collection [CNG eSale 385 (26 Oct 2016) Lot 470]; CNG 49 (17 Mar 1999), Lot 1316; Reinhold Faelten Collection [Stack's (20 Jan 1938) Lot 1495]. About a month ago, I acquired this Roman Republican AE Sextans of the "Collateral" Series of Semilibral Reduction coins. I previously found the coin in a 1927 Otto Helbing sale. A few nights ago, while flipping through the Stack's Faelton catalogue hoping to find a different coin, I noticed the below photo and the distinctive mark in the metal above the Wolf and Twins. Rome, The Republic. Anonymous (Semilibral) Series, 217-215 BCE. AE Sextans (25.91g; 29mm). Uncertain Italian Mint. Obverse: She-wolf facing right, head turned left, suckling the twins, Romulus & Remus; ●● (mark-of-value) below. Reverse: Eagle facing right with flower in beak; ROMA to right; ●● (mark-of-value) behind. References: Crawford 39/3; Sydenham 95; BMCRR (Romano-Campanian) 120-124; RBW 107. Provenance: Ex Reinhold Faelton Collection [Stack's (20-2 Jan 1938) Lot 923]; Otto Helbing Auction (24 Oct 1927) Lot 3267. So, I have reunited another pair of old collection coins!
