Dude, reread Abe's post and you'll see that he obviously misinterpreted the OP. Why won't YOU know who it is that your standing up for. stainless
I doubt he did misinterpret the OP... I've seen Abe's post on other threads of the OP, and this is no different. I know who I am standing up for.
Why not reread his post then? It is clear he (abe) is talking about jobs thinking BNB is going to retire completely from working. Now, reread the OP...he didn't say nothing about living with mommy, he didn't say nothing about jobs, nothing like that, he said...shoot, I'll just quote: stainless
I can see what you are saying, and I get it 100%, and I will just give him the benefit of the doubt, and keep my opinions to myself.
I know BNB is not retiring from work, I am referring to the subject of Key dates and Semi-Key dates. All I meant was if a 24 year old man has so much money to spend on these coins, He must have a very well paying job.. The people who get their hands grimey, greasy, and dirty earn their paychecks the hard way, and appreciate every dollar they earn. Therefore they're less likely to go overboard on such purchases.. And to all you sensitive momma's boys, I'm sorry... Good Nite Coin Talk...
You know Abe, there is somethin' to be said for livin' by your wits. Some folks are better at it than others.
To think that those of us who don't sweat or get our hands dirty in our professions do not work hard and therefore do not appreciate every dollar we earn is pretty insulting.
heck, I currently do grunt work for a living and even I was a bit taken aback by Abe's comment! Unfortunately some people are getting a bit sensitive here and then reacting in a personal manner. We all need to chill out. I think BNB got the point that everyone has been bashing over his head all week. Now we should just let him be and get back to coins!
Enough on whether blue collar labor is better than white collar. That is a topic totally irrelevant to coin collecting. Keep this thread on track. We are watching it carefully.
Allow me to post my opinion on the discussion about learning to grade from slabs, etc. It doesn't have to be an "either/or" thing. But learning to grade, however you want to go about doing it, is the most important thing you could do for yourself as a coin collector. Using slabs, as Illini said, is a great way to start, but I would also add that finding a competent coin person you trust and respect and is willing to "mentor" you in learning to grade is even better. As I've said before, TPS's are only human beings with their own ideas and experience or training so they will not get it "right" (whatever that definition means relating to grading) all the time, so you need to learn from other sources as well, and put that learning all together to form what you feel (and what the market bears) are good grading skills. Regarding BNB "retiring," I think, as he himself stated, he used that term a little loosely and we shouldn't be so quick to look at it in such a negative or laughable (as some here are doing) thing. I think and my take is that BNB may have realized that he has gotten into this a little too quickly (maybe even a little over his head?) and is taking more of a breather to gather himself and decide which direction he wants to head, whether it be with coins or school or whatever. So perhaps "retiring" was the wrong choice of words, maybe "taking a breather" is more appropriate? And teaching others what he has learned is a good thing to want to do. And BNB, as others have said, be sure you KNOW what you are talking about before you pass information on to "newbies" as they will not know whether what you teach is correct or not. I think some feel that you haven't learned enough to be able to teach others. But I am sure you have learned some good and positive things through this brief experience of yours, so just be sure to pass on good quality information. And whether BNB has the money to buy expensive coins, or do nothing, or whether he works with his hands or his mind, I don't think this is for us to judge and is really none of our business, so personally I don't see why that even needs to be addressed or commented upon. And lastly, I have to agree, whether you like or agree or disagree with BNB's posts, they seem to always end up being entertaining but informative (however, we can all do without the negativity that often ends up in his threads). I have given BNB my input in several of his threads, and sometimes I get frustrated when I read his posts, but we don't all have to agree or like what other people say or do, but at least here on CoinTalk, we should all be respectful.
Good posts thus far. The reason I'm "retiring" is because I've met my coin quota. I got the coins I originally wanted when I came here in August. After my old friend Mike(who was a new dealer a few years ago) indirectly got me into coins, I just knew I had to have a few nice types. So, there ya have it. It has nothing to do with me getting in too quick. I just don't need anymore coins and my finances for this are at about an end too.
I do not plan retiring from coin collecting there always a new die or variety to hunt:kewl: But I still PO that the Us Mint not doing an ASE Proof this year
