I found this half dollar in circulation about 2-1/2 years ago. Was looking through the error forum here and thought I’d share it. It’s a ‘76-D Kennedy half dollar with a retained struck through staple on the bottom of the reverse. Apparently this ‘staple’ is more likely a brush part from a piece of cleaning equipment.

I’ve seen a 60’s memorial cent and a Franklin half with the same staple as well.

I sent it to NGC and it currently sits in a MS-64 ‘retained staple strike-through’ labeled holder. Definitely one of my favorite circulation finds. Thanks for looking.

Very cool. I wonder what the mint workers were doing in Denver in 76. They made some interesting errors. Here is mine:

Here’s a pic of the slab.

I have another cool string struck through on a ‘76 but I don’t have pic’s handy. Thanks for looking.

That is so true. This box was probably legit 50%+ BU ‘76-D’s. I was rifling through at breakneck speed, really only edge and proof checking. I happen to see it and nonchalantly tossed it aside. When I was done with the box I looked at it and then had to get the microscope to figure out what was going on. I bet I have a 1:20 shot of noticing that coin in that box.

    First, welcome to the neighborhood!

Yes, it is impolite to hijack someone's thread. You should start your own thread. However, in this case, you would be wasting your time. It is PMD, nothing more. Spend it!
