Higher pressure and lower speeds are intentionally used on all mint set coins and have been since 1965. Dies are swapped out more often so crisp strikes are far more likely.

But many dates of mint set coins have their own particular problems from bad surfaces, retained marking, scratches, or even shallow scrapes as seen on most '80-D half dollars. There is a very high correlation between mint set quality for any specific coin and populations of high grades awarded by the services. This is because most high grade moderns were issued in mint sets. The few that were well made for circulation almost all became circulated because these coins were, and are being ignored.

Is it possible that they took a 67, and used an Adobe program to provide an example of what a 68 would be? Not that they would ever do that (or admit to it).

Far more likely that the software just put it in the wrong grade or something like that. There may have been one that existed at one time as has been mentioned, but they wouldn't make theoretical ones that haven't been graded yet

SO TRUE about the '73-P, cladking. Here is a 73-P and 73-D I have to showcase the difference. Gosh, the 73-P is just riddled with marks.

As far as downgrading, a certain Lincoln Memorial MS70 comes to mind....

I received a reply from PCGS this morning.

I guess this will remain a mystery, but my gut tells me this coin, slabbed and labeled as MS68, doesn't exist, at least not anymore. Boy, I really wanted it to be a real thing. :grumpy:

I note no attempt at explaining why they still have one listed for reference. :)

I know. I'm just a wee bit perturbed by that.
