    San Marino 5 Lire 1933

    I recently bought a US coin on Ebay from a seller in Australia.

    He had a whole list of countries which he would not ship to, including Monaco and San Marino.

    10 lire 1933, silver .835, weight - 10 g., size - 27 mm, mintage - 25000 pcs. Engraver: Enrico Saroldi. Such coins were released at 1931-33 & 1935-38.

    Those were pretty much the last coins that San Marino was allowed to issue under the monetary agreement with Italy. It took more than 30 years until San Marino could issue coins again.

    As for how old the country is, today the "official birthday" is 3 September 301. But 885 is important too as the Placito Feretrano, a sort of court report dated 20 February 885, acknowledges San Marino's independence with regard to the bishop of Rimini. And I think that was the first documentary mention of San Marino ...
