I like cardboard 2x2s for low value coins. I keep some of these in long boxes, and they can get tight. Years ago, I scratched some removing them from the box. I've always used pliers since. Plus, protruding staples can make insertion and removal from the Mylar pages difficult. If you're careful, I guess you can get away without pressing the staples, but why chance it

I have never had a scratch or toning issue with cardboard, but I would never use them for unc or high value coins (only no-PVC flips for them)

Finally, I got a good deal years ago on a 1901S quarter. AG and no issues other than wear EXCEPT a new short scratch going to the rim that stood out. Absolutely happened when someone removed it from a 2x2. It wasn't deep and a well placed thumb and 25 years, it is no longer detracting. But, someone lost some money because of the scratch and I got lucky and filled the last hole my barber quarter album for a great price

I no longer collect coins, but in 1960 I started out using Whitman folders. And over the years I used just about everything there was at one time or another including coin envelopes, 2x2s, albums, Cointains, and when they came along Air-Tites and slabs.

Since then I have always recommended that any of the hard plastic coin holders are the optimal choice. They not only provide superior protection from scratches and contact marks they also provide a certain amount of protection from toning by limiting the amount of air flow that can get to a coin when coupled with proper storage methods.

Think of it this way, if a coin is worthy of being in your collection, is it not then worthy of the best protection you can give it ?
