75c in quarters that were all chewing gummed together. 60c in Canadian. 2 cents. Ho hum, nothing numismatic. Talking to a young lady working at the pawn shop about looking for finds in Coinstar machines and she said her boyfriend is 6'5" and finds coins on top of the machine all the time! Heck, I've found them in the reject slot, under the machine, on the sorting tray, behind the machine and on the counter in front of the machine, in the nearby trash can - but never on top of the machine. Dayum, now there is a whole new place in proximity to the machine I need to check. I'll post my pawn shop find later - it is an interesting piece of history.
I believe it can happen. Few years ago found a 3-cent piece (nickle make, not the silver var), in a bank box MWRof dimes. It can & does happen, just being at the right place at right time. Congrats on your find.
I'm 6'4", and I can't see the top of a CoinStar. I've seen coins on top of vending machines, but not very often. And after seeing how much dust and grime accumulates on top of those machines, I'm not inclined to grope blindly over them.
This morning swung by supermarket for donuts, checked Coinstar and 9 nasty FUBAR coins but on checking them 6 were silver Washington quarters including 60, 64, 51 and I think 42. Yay for nasty coins!
Long term lurker who decided to start posting. I was inspired to get into the Coinstar hunting game by this forum and I started doing so about two weeks ago when I moved to a new area. I have to say either I've had amazing luck or this place is pretty productive. I've found several dozen foreign coins, including a 1919 Canadian penny, and have snagged 5 silver coins, including a 1942 Mercury dime I just found today!
I stopped by HEB yesterday and checked the Coinstar and found nothing. Today we were in Kroger and walked by a Coinstar and saw nothing. Waiting to try 3 and see if I'm out.
I never use Coinstar machines but - inspired by this ongoing thread - earlier this week I peeked and noticed something had been rejected by one so I reached in... Modern car wash token, Cascade Car Wash Portland Oregon.
On a coinstar... Mexico 1 peso and 50 centavo Jamaica 1 dollar France 2 euro cent Austria 1 euro cent
My all time total for CoinStar finds was, until last week, exactly ONE nasty, splotchy, beat-up, bent zinc cent that had huge craters from corrosion. Wasn't even dateable, though post-1982, obviously. Nor was it even spendable as one cent, it was so horrid. So that was it for me and CoinStar. Since the beginning of time. Until ... last week! When I found, in the reject slot... ... wait for it... Tah-dahhh!!! ONE nasty, bent, cheap brass hoop earring! YAYYY!!! Woohoo! It even had a little blackish crud on it, though not as nasty as my Zincoln had been. I guess I should stick to detecting, instead, huh?
Reject tube and Coinstar finds are fun, but I sometimes feel like a schmuck doing it because of people watching me. I do it for the silver.
I completely understand that as I have the same thoughts. Free silver worth it though! Better to look, but do fight the urge to yell Bingo! when you do find silver like I wanted to last week. Now that would be a little odd.
Would never yell Bingo but like I said it is a bit weird. And for me I have to put my hand in every time because you can miss coins that you can't see because they are close to the front of the tray.
Exactly. I still was blown away last week with all the silver quarters I found. Those nasty little suckers scored me 6 silvers.
Nothing really interesting to report in the last two days, just $0.89 US and $0.15 Canadian. Seems like all my significant finds come around the end of the week.
The machine I stop by the most is in a pretty isolated spot (in a vestibule next to the Redbox). So I go in this evening and notice that there's a good handful of change in the Coinstar... and a guy perusing the RedBox selections. Guess he had a hard time deciding between third-rate explosion movie vs kids movie, because he was looking at those damn things for 5 minutes while I stood nearby, trying to make it look like I needed to return a DVD. Finally he moves, but doesn't leave the vestibule... so I pretend to peruse the RedBox titles for a minute, then pretend to tie my shoe and grab the coins... for all my effort: Jamaica 10 dollars Jamaica 5 dollars (x4) Canada 25 cents (x2) UK 5 pence 1 common US nickel & 2 zinc cents. Thought I had a good bankroll of Jamaican money until I realized that 30 Jamaican dollars is worth about a quarter...
