You threw it in the trash? If I were you I would have taken it to the bank and exchanged it for newer cents. I just can not even think about throwing away money! How sad throwing away money no matter how beat up it is:(.

I've tried to redeem corroded up cents and it is a real crap shoot. And you have to pick your battles - I don't care to do it over three cents I found in a coinstar.

"Find a penny, pick it up..."

...and you stand a small chance of wrenching your back, or getting hit by a car that doesn't see you, or even just getting something nasty on your hands.

Between the diminished value of the cent, and the composition change that has them oozing mildly toxic and potentially corrosive chemicals once they're damaged, we've reached a point where "picking up a penny" is more likely to be BAD luck.

Maybe it's easier if you tell yourself "they aren't really money any more". :(

Well... Instead of throwing it away, you should leave it there for someone who might want it and have use for it. Just my opinion.

I see your point however, every penny counts. I myself being young and certainly not rich, I like to save them up. I tend to pick up evey coin I find. last year I found over five dollars in pennies alone. I will have to count up the rest of the change and let you guys know just how much I found. I found over one hundred dollars in coin alone last year around my high school. Just looking at my stats, I bet it would change your opinion on the topic.

I'm sure there are many of us that frequently come across damaged coins. I keep a jar for all the mutilated coins I come across. While it may be a fools errand, I figure in about a decade I'll have enough busted coin to ship back to the Mint for redemption.

So a summary of what happens to coin machine etc finds:

    Silver - save
    wheats etc - save
regular change - into donation bins, Wal-Mart and Kroger have them
    foreign - save
damaged - save, mostly bents that I flatten with a hammer.
damaged but heavily corroded - dustbinned.

Nothing in the coinstar machine at the supermarket. Figured I would go to the customer service counter and buy a book of stamps since the price is going up 2 cents a piece tomorrow. Got 10 cents change. Happened to be a 1964 dime. Saw the toning first and new right away. Doesn't show up as good in the pic. I guess the government raising the price of stamps deserves some credit for this find.
