I am cleaning a new batch of ancients and came across this strange coin. Like most coins it was completely covered in dirt and crust. When I got the first layers off I noticed a strange edge. It looks reeded, very rough. I didn't do it with my cleaning and it appears to have been there from the time it was buried. Any ideas how this could happen?

Probably a mechanical file, for some reason

Could be Ptolemaic - they sometimes coarsely filed the edges of their coins. Looks like the obverse could be Zeus, too.

Thanks Finn. Gives me a lead.

Compared to other, untouched parts of the edge, the filing seems modern...to my old eyes.

Yeah.. maybe they put some low quality coins in dirt to create uncleaned coins?

Or damaged by farm equipment or something.
