The pit itself is a lamination, where the metal, due to a structural flaw, separated from the flan either at the mint during striking or in circulation. That depression apparently attracted moisture and oxide deposits over centuries of burial, allowing the chemical process of BD to develop. When I received the coin the BD was not apparent.
