I thought this was opportune as all these coins seem to be very worn and brown, rather than red or red-brown. I also thought that the George III coin might have been called Hibernia for political reasons because that name is Roman, and 'Eire is Gaelic.....just a thought. Apparently, Hibernia means cold and wet, re the seasons.
It's raw and was only graded generally as XF......by the European auction house....do you think it might be worth a slab next time I am sending some coins to NGC?
Nice coin. Sounds like Hibernia was used on these because the classics were "in" at the time. Just trying to be cool. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibernia
As under British Rule.....the last thing we wanted was any reference to their own language, history and culture, just my guess.
Certainly they had disdain for the Irish culture and language, but using the Latin was only consistent practice. Even the monarch's name and title were in Latin, not English, for coins used in England.
