I've had some presidential dollars in a dish on my desk for a few years...and they're REALLY looking bad! Almost all of them have corrosion spots with verdigris showing...and they've just been sitting there. I suspect the survival rate of the dollar coins will be low.
I just received my 2010 dollars today. Packaging could use a little help, but the rolls seem fine. I've only opened one roll so far and it's a D mint, but it does not indicate this on the roll. Actually, the coins are quite beautiful with nice luster and full strikes. So far, no errors or varieties noticed yet. And at least in this first roll, no MS65's or above yet. Lots of 63's and 64's.
I asked this question in another thread last week and it only had a few replies. The replies that I got said that the mint paper is ok for long term storage.
Thanks Swagge1, I really didn't know the answer to whether the paper rolls used by the mint contained enough acid to do any damage long term. That's the question Belisarius asked. I just assumed that why would they use the particular paper if it did create damage. Also, I've never heard of modern paper rolls used by the mint or H.E. String & Sons causing any problems lately. I guess I'll hear about it now. Buy still no air, maybe no acid reaction???? zeke Thanks Belisarius, you are one of the very few members that has expressed an opinion on this method. The one drawback is if you want to look you coins over like twice a year you have to unseal it then reseal it afterwards. To me this is no problem, I enjoy sealing and resealing.
....i have to wonder whether or not the mint worries about the 'special' wrappers containing anything harmful. the premium price for the coins in the paper aren't any better quality than the direct ship or bank rolls that can be had for face, so i don't think there's a mint concern for anyone. jmo
Right or wrong good or bad I don't know, but I have been getting one roll ea of the Prez $1 from my bank when they come out, the he string rolls, pay face value. I put them in a pill bottle like you get meds in, i get them at Walgreens $.10ea, perfect fit for a dollar roll. The coins from couple yrs ago look as good as received. thanks, douglas
I believe our Administrator, GDJMSP, has strong opinion against keeping the coins in any wrapper including the wrapper from the US Mint. I know we pay a great premium for the coins but Doug feels that keeping the coins is harmful for the long run. I think I am conveying his message correctly. I hope he would provide some input on this issue. Personally, I value his opinions.
You're right. It takes some time and effort to consciously spend them. I went ahead and tried to cash 4 rolls at the post office for a $100 money order. The clerk looked at them and said she had to check with the manager (can you believe that???) When she came back 3 minutes later, she just took them without ripping open the rolls and said she just found out these are 'collectibles'. She proceeded to cut me the money order without incident.
I know, I know. I made the stupid mistake of ordering $500 instead of $250. This is my first and only time I will circumvent the intent. I am happily going to circulate the other $250.
I mistakenly thought the 2001's I ordered would be in ok shape and was going to keep several rolls and spend the rest. But when they arrived discolored and ugly (there is another thread about this), I didn't want to keep any of them.
But then again, why assume the post office is not going to circulate the coins and not give them out as change? That's circulating the coins afterall.
Some of my 2001's seem to have come through spotless... luck of the draw? It is a little annoying to spend the $1 coins, but I've been throwing a handful in my pocket for lunch and had no trouble spending a few rolls so far. I actually kind of like the way a handful of these look....
The idea is that YOU are supposed to circulate them - that means take them out of their rolls and spend them, not trade them for another form of cash (a money order) in bulk. Personally, I don't care, but them's the rules...
Like I've said earlier in the post, I am only doing it because my plan to hold on to some of them was ruined when they came spotted and discolored. I am spending the remainder of the coins wherever I can. I didn't do the worst thing I could have done which would be to take them straight to the bank. At least there is a slight chance the post office will break open the rolls and give the coins out as change.
That is like saying "I deposited the money at the bank. Maybe they will circulate them". Let's face facts, not only did you violate the rules of the program, you violated the spirit of the program. You should be banned from ordering from the direct ship program. (just kidding)
