I'm new to coins, and came across a 1999 Delaware state quarter where it's really mangled. I don't know if this was a minting error or post-minting damage. On the side with the rider, the reverse, the metal sits atop, as if it's extra added. The obverse it's like a crater, with a raised edge.

Is this worth anything? Is it worth it to get this looked at by a professional?

I took these with my iPhone4, which is not great on macro shots.

Thoughts? Theories as to how this got so mangled?

My guess is it was heated, causing bubbling. I’d go with a definite PMD.

    Welcome to CT
Based on the pics I would agree it appears to be PMD.

    NO! NO! NO!

@carla strange Your coin did not leave the mint in that condition. Please do not confuse the OP. The answers from @Dave363 and @paddyman98 are correct

Both coins shown in this thread are
    Damaged/Altered surfaces.

Neither one left the Mint like that.

@carla strange your coin also exhibits PMD along with the OP coin. Please do not confuse the OP with that by saying it's an error.

    I agree completely.
