It screams "fake" because it IS fake. And a poor one at that. Too many problems to list... Liberty's face, bun, denticles, stars...
I think the other posters, like me, call fake TDs fake only after carefully examining the pictures and any other available information. I certainly hesitate, but only until I am certain of my position. With the far eastern connection, and my specialization in Japanese coinage, TDs are about the only US/British coins that I ever express an opinion on because they are the only ones I have studied. Saying "what a wonderful coin" about everything that is posted, just to make the poster feel good, would be ridiculous and untrue.
When a posted picture is of a counterfeit coin, there is nothing impolite or unprofessional about saying so. Most members make it very clear when they are certain, or merely suspicious, and give their reasons for doing so. Saying "There were no Trade Dollars minted in 1979" may be considered "trashing" the phony 1979 TD, but certainly doesn't "trash" the innocent poster. (IF the poster knows it's counterfeit and is trying to pass it off, he/she deserves "trashing"). Adding, "Draw your own conclusion about whether your 1979 TD is is fake or real" is about as stupid and unreal as any comment could be. Learn to distinguish between a comment about a coin, and a comment about its owner.
I havent seen any members being impolite in this thread. We're merely reaching our conclusions and posting our observations for the OP. Within those posts are the details of our observations, which the OP can himself learn from. Remember...this person came to us for help. It wouldnt be saying much for us if we just lied to him about the coin, telling him "it looks great, send it to PCGS!" I'd rather be honest than misleading just to make him/her feel good about the coin.
A number of posters seem to have missed that key diagnostic, which tells us that the particular coin in question is counterfeit. Who would like to mention the differences between type 1 and type 2 reverses and why an 1877-S with a type 1 reverse must be counterfeit?
I'm not sure why you asked about the differences between the obverses, instead of the reverses, which is what I mentioned.
The seller send me a message last night(4 days later) and said the coin weights approximately 27.187..
Sorry, I don't have the answer to your question. And I'm really confused, now. You have made a couple of posts which would lead me to think you have knowledge about genuine vs. counterfeit Trade Dollars. Yet in one of your posts to this thread, you wrote in part: So I don't know if you know your stuff or not and/or whether you're playing games. I'm just being honest about not knowing where you're coming from. Also, based on the exchanges in this thread, at least, I see no evidence that anyone has flamed you or wants you off the forum.
Close, but no cigar. That weight is lighter than the extremely tight 420 grain (27.22g) tolerance for the coin, and doesn't show enough wear to justify the weight loss.
Not trying to flame anyone or be rude, but ozarktravler, I gotta point out that nobody is bashing the original poster's coin. Its not his coin, I think its one from e-bay that he was just curious about. Warning folks that it wouldn't be smart to buy this coin is the right thing to do. Peace
