Real British gold sovereigns in a movie - National Velvet (1944)

    This 1944 MGM film "National Velvet" has a scene where Elizabeth Taylor's mother gives her 100 gold sovereigns to enter her horse in England's Grand National race.

    The Shilling is real and the sovereigns appear to be real also.

    I wonder how hard it was to round up these coins in 1940's Los Angeles where the film was made.

    I'm not convinced they used real sovereigns, but the shillings would/could have come back with American soldiers.
