Well probably 2016, on the presidential dollars at least. (Still some debate, a debeate I don't want to reopen here, as to whether the legislation would allow for a Reagan dollar if Carter is still alive... it's a matter of interpretation that hasn't had an official conclusive declaration made, yet.) There's been proposals for a Reagan commemorative, but they backed off because Nancy Reagan doesn't want one, not yet at least. Not like she has veto power if Congress decided to pass legislation to put one out or anything, but when the president's wisow is still alive they tend to respect her wishes (Jackie Kennedy was consulted on the JFK half dollar, for example. At one point they were considering putting JFK on the quarter but they didn't because Jackie didn't want JFK to replace Washington.). 2011 would be a good year for one I think; would be the 100th anniversary of his birth. Maybe Nancy can be convinced to go for it then. There's been other commemoratives put out on the 100th anniversary of a president's birth before; the 1990 Eisenhower silver dollar, for example. Well arguably also the Lincoln cent (was started in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, though it was a circulating coin, not a true "commemorative" in the sense that word's usually used.) I seem to recall some science fiction short story somewhere... can't for the life of me remember the name or author... set at some point in the future, where Reagan was featured on a circulation $3 coin, commonly referred to as "Reagans" by people. Be interesting to see that denomination again... though perhaps something like a $1 or $5 coin would be more practical.
I doubt if Mrs Reagan would object to a commemorative coin with her husband on it. Her objection wasn't to his portrait being on a coin , but rather to his portrait replacing Roosevelt's on the dime which was what had been proposed.
That's my understanding... I think she just objected to Reagan replacing a president on a circulating coin, I doubt she'd have much issue with a one time comemmorative. Again, I think 2011 would be the perfect year for one, being the 100th anniversary of his birth (also 30th anniversary of his inauguration). Jackie Kennedy had a similar objection to her husband replacing Washington on the quarter, as had been proposed at a time... she eventually consented to the half dollar, since Benjamin Franklin wasn't a president. (At the time the half dollar was the only circulating coin not depicting a president.)
I would like to see him on the dime. I am getting tired of Rosie's it's been what 63-64 years. Let's move on and change the quarter with Teddy Roosevelt put Reagan on the dime and put out a real 1 dollar coin and get rid of the dollar bill. Maybe a 2 and 3 dollar coin also. Ice
I don't thin she would even object to him being on a circulating coin. It was just the dime she was objecting to. Roosevlet was a kind of Mentor of Reagan's and although he broke with his politics (Reagan was a stauch Democrat until Roosevelt embarked on the New Deal at which point Reagan went over to the Republican party.) but he was still a great admirer of Roosevelt the man and Nancy feel that he would not want to be replacing on the dime a man that he held in high esteem. And I am sure she would probably objectto him relacing Washington or Lincoln or Jefferson for the same reasons. (This illustrates the mistake of putting admired politicians on the coins. It becomes politically impossible to ever stop using them.)
