I find it hard to believe this sold for $ 406 with 26 bidders ??? http://www.ebay.com/itm/301192181898?_trksid=p2055120.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT It looks harshly cleaned & polished to me. I own several 1832's CBH and have not paid big $ for any that look like this.
I know exactly "squat" about CBHs, but could it be what looks like some doubling of the lips, nose, chin and neck?
I agree with the "cleaned" description. And for that amount of money I'd want it slabbed. Maybe the bidders were depending on a refund for calling it SNAD? Heck of a lot of money to try that.
In 1832 15 different obverse dies and 16 different reverse dies were used to produce 23 different die marriages, do you know which Overton Variety's you have? There are a couple of rare die marriages for 1832, they will fetch a premium over condition pricing to those who are collecting them by Die Marriage. When you see a coin fetch over double what you think its worth, its time to learn why..... R4 81-200 (estimated known) Very Scarce R5 31-80 (estimated known) Rare R6 13-30 (estimated known) Very Rare R7 4-12 (estimated known) Extremely Rare R8 1-3 (estimated known) Unique or Nearly Unique
No, it had 26 bids, not 26 bidders. Big difference. I count 6 distinct bidders. Once it got past $83, it was just two bidders in the battle. Maybe they both knew something all of us don't; maybe they just thought they did. Hard to say which is more likely.
Frank , I don't think it's a O-109 , the E-D and I-T relationships are close , but I don't see any lines extending below the shield . Also star 7 looks to be in the middle of 2 dentils . But I've been wrong before .
What do you think it is Rusty? I keep coming back to O-109, but my eyes are watering from the glare off that blast white coin.
If you and Frank think it's a O-109 , you're probably right . As I keep coming up blank on the others . Just because I can't see the lines below the shield and the position of star 7 , doesn't mean the lines aren't there . I hate these later dates with so many marriages . lol
I don't have a book for the Overton's. Mine were submitted to NGC & they determined the O numbers. Here is a link to Dave on the NGC forums that has an extensive CBH collection. >> http://www.maibockaddict.com/1832-o-109-r4-capped-bust-half-dollar
Here is a little something I have been working on in my spare time BustieGuide Its not complete, but the information that is there is very useful.
Alan , your site never ceases to amaze me . You are definitely one of the people who gives to the numismatic community , I thank you again .
Thanks for the compliments on BustieGuide everyone. I drew some lines....maybe it will help for comparison to the overton book... The "T" to "I" looks like its Left side of T and right side of I to me, which would narrow it down to 107, 109, 110, 118, and the super rare 123
Alan , for star 7 . The 109 says upper half , to me even accounting for wear of the die it looks more to the middle . Also in your enlarged pic I still don't see any of stripe 3s lines extending past the shield . What do you think ?
