I know I'm new here and I just want to point out that I know this coin might be pmd. But don't we all want to find coins like this? Also the X marks the spot comment killed me and my wife. Funny stuff!!!! There's gold in that there coin... arrrrgggggg Also I did send like two pictures to Fred Weinberg of this coin. He replied with this.. Sean, Thanks for the scans. Here’s the info on your coins: 1. The 1960-D Cent is damaged - someone cut the X on both sides. It’s not an error coin of any type. 2. The 1925 Cent has a common ‘lamination’ on the obverse. It’s worth a few dollars, and the only place to sell such an item would be on Ebay….too common for any dealer to make you an offer. 3.The Mexican coin is 10% off center - a genuine error, but the coin appears to be cleaned - it’s worth $5+ on Ebay. Hope this info helps….they’re not for me, and as mentioned, Ebay is the only venue for the last two items. Fred What I don't understand is why is the mouth area of Abe flat with no texture? It's a perfect outline of his chin. My thoughts were that maybe just maybe something got into the coin when it was struck. I am going to put this coin away because I do love my find. Thanks everyone for your comments.
Because whatever was used to make the X was flat around the X. when it was pressed or struck the area around the X was flattened. Nothing about this coin is an error. You are over thinking the whole process. the flattened area is damage from the punch. Sorry, but this coin isn't going to make you rich.
And it follows the contours of the chin because the flat area of the punch didn't make contact with the field so it just flattened the chin.
