Rare Gold Coin Found in Salvation Kettle

Since there are so many of them every year - and there are more than most might think all across the country - I've often wondered how the SA would deal with gold coin donations. So I did a little searching to see what I could find out.

Unfortunately I could not find any answer or any reference to that specifically at all. But what I did find out is that the SA X-mas drives are not conducted on a national level, but rather by each individual mission in each and every town or city. In other words it's always done on a local effort only. So it's up to each individual in charge of each mission to determine what to do with gold coins if they receive one.

I also found out that in some cases it happens each and every year, and has for over 20 years at particular missions. But for the most part it's hit and miss.

Now maybe for the particular missions where it repeatedly happens they might have set up a partnership with a local dealer, and maybe even one who treats them fairly if it's anything but a bullion coin. But I suspect that in most cases the coins are sold for melt to whatever business happens to be locally handy because the average person wouldn't know how to do anything else. But even at that it's definitely a significant, and very appreciated, donation.
