Not a rare date, but I bought this one Thursday at a coin shop. Hoping it comes back MS64 and not "altered surfaces," or something like that.

Thanks, guys. Coins like this scare me to death, though. Every time I find something that looks like this, whatever coin it may be, I always ask myself, "what's wrong with it?? There must be some reason it's not in a holder!?!"

 

It's probably just the images, but my first impression was altered surfaces.

 

What are your concerns ? I admit I don't see as many coins as you and pics aren't the ideal way to look at a coin , but besides a light dip the luster looks all there .

I own a handful of ancients, but I'm mainly an early US proof collector. The 1913 represented the final coin that I needed to complete the twentieth century set started by my great grandfather.

That's one sweet coin to put in a type set . I always buy the common dates .

 

It wasn't part of a type set, it was actually the last coin that I needed to complete the twentieth century set cent through dollar. The 1901-S, 1913-S and the 1916 SLQ were the last three coins that I needed and it took six years to acquire them.
