I think everyone more than adequately answered your question. They're not rare. They're just not dumped into circulation yet. I didn't get my first new 09 Lincoln cent in change until September. How many billions of those are going out? The Kennedy halves are rare. Have been for several years now. Not being issued for circulation. 1.7 million P's a year 1.7 million D's a year But nobody seems to care about them because you can't get them in circulation. Despite how popular the series is. It's been 8 years of this and the word doesn't seem to get out. Instead people get excited over 80-100 million mintages. I don't get it.
I sent an email to the FRB and asked why there were no 09 dimes and nickels I didn't figure they would reply but they did and told me to wait there were enough out right now so there was no reason to send any of '09 coins to banks yet they said we will see them just later when there is a demand for more coins. Take that for what its worth. Kent
To those that made money on these - good for you, great job! Methinks that many of these issues will be the 1950-D nickels of the future - lower mintage and highly saved dates. However, the super nice examples (MS-67 and above) should be worth holding on to.
This same thing happens every year. Except now due to the State Quarters there are many, many more collectors out there. So this means as fast as the new ones come out, people tend to hoard them. Then when everyone realizes that no one really wants all those, they start spending them and they all appear late in the year or early next year. The nIckel is probably the least collected of all our modern coins so you will be seeing them all to soon. Not sure of the amount minted but regardless, they more than likely will not be worth anything for a few hundred years. And as to your friend using those folders. You should explain the dangers of those to coins. He really should be using Albums for his kids futures.
I can't speak to the dimes but consider this for the nickels. Go back and find the last year when the mintage was this low or lower and you come up with 1959, 27 million instead of this years 40 million. And the 1959's were NOT widely hoarded. And according to the last time I looked in the Graysheet, after fifty years OBW rolls of 1959 nickels are up to .....$4. Doesn't sound like a great return on your investment and I suspect the 2009 in the long run won't be much better.
if you talking about rare dime and nickel for 2009. american samoa (d) is the rarest with 39,600,000. the rarest for 2009 dime and nickel is jefferson (p) at 39,840,000. so jefferson (p) ranked second. third and fourth are the virgin islands (p) and (d) with 41,000,000 each. dime not even within the first four places. 5th is james polk dollar (d) at 41,720,000.
I misspoke in my last entry. There is NO 'I' in the motto on the coins I have. Sorry for the mistake.
Does anyone else out there have any 2009P Roosevelt Dimes with the 'I' in the motto "In God We Trust?" I found three in a roll I purchased recently and was wondering if anyone out there has run across similar mint errors as well.
I think there was a whole lot of people who started hoarding the 2009's a while ago ( 70's 80's ? ) My guess a few people posted it on public media and it just grew and grew.
