Rare “X” Canceled State Quarter Die?

Hello everyone! While I don’t frequent these forums very much, I wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has an example of one of the State Quarter dies that were sold by the US mint that is quite like mine.

I have collected several examples from different States and as most of you know, the face of the dies are completely ground down, showing no detail whatsoever.

However, I was lucky enough to find this. It is a die that has been cancelled with an “X” (and looks like colored with a sharpie or something) but the vast majority of the detail remains. This is very similar to the cancelled Olympic coin dies that are floating around.

Has anyone else come across one of these dies that has not been fully cancelled out?

    Thanks! 541495CB-DB42-4050-B3C2-A1B20A8AE97B.jpeg

Did it come with a Certificate of Authenticity?

Yes and it matches the number on the die

It's cool that the mint allowed these to go out to the public.

I remember seeing these dies on sale from the US Mint (back in '99-'02?), but if I recall correctly, they were shaved down such that there was no remain of the coin -- presumably to deter/prevent counterfeits. Never seen one with an X like this...

Does the first character "P" in the (I presume) serial number mean it's a die from the Philadelphia Mint?

I've never seen or even heard of one cancelled in this fashion.

Yes it does, and if you blow up the image you will also see it has a P mintmark.

The Olympic 1995-96 dies were cancelled with an "X" like this.

I believe @Conder101 was only referring to the circulating coin dies sold by the mint after the Olympic dies, when he posted that he had never seen once canceled like this. I also recall that these dies were defaced by grinding most/all of the surface so the type was unidentifiable.

Keep an eye out for “error” coins that could be altered using these dies. I wish the mint would Continue to completely deface the die so fake error coins could not be produced.

That's the thing, I think this was a mistake by the Philadelphia Mint, letting this die out without the face being completely removed. All of the other examples of these dies from the State Quarters I have see have had the face completely ground smooth.

My guess is, when preparing the dies for final defacement, they place the "X" on the face as it waits for final removal. This die somehow missed the final step of getting completely defaced and was sent out with all of the other dies.

I don't understand the desire to own an expired defaced die in the first place. To each his own! Good conversation post though, thank you.

It's not a mistake, they were as common as dirt for years. In point of fact, the mint has canceled dies in a similar manner for as long as the mint has existed. These for example -

I know I’ve seen the x cancelled modern dies somewhere. Pretty neat, but the Carson City die would surpass most everything in coolness.

My LCS had a couple of dime dies with the X a couple of years ago. At $30+/-, I should've bought them, but didn't. :banghead:

I once had the opportunity to buy an uncanceled Morgan obv die. But it was $11,000, more than I had in my pocket - thank god !

But I do have a picture of it buried in some old files someplace. :)

Yes, I was referring to the Circulation dies, specifically the state quarter dies. I have seen three types of cancellation on modern dies, 1968 proof dies that had their faces "Puddled" with a torch, the Olympic commemorative dies that were canceled by the X ground into the face, and the state quarter and a few other dies that had their entire face ground off. I have never seen a state quarter die defaced with an X like that.

I have, both in person and on the mint's website back then, as well as many, many, after market sales. I considered buying some from the mint myself. I also seem to recall these SQ X canceled dies being posted about quite a few times on the forum over the years. I'll check and see what a search brings up.

I’m confident they are legit. At a coin show a few (3-7?) years ago, Ken Potter had at least one and possibly a matching pair of dies canceled in same way. I don’t recall the specific denomination or year, but they were from the US Mint.
For those not familiar with Ken Potter, use your favorite search engine and include “numismatic” in your query.
