I'm not sure I agree. I like the old designs better in general, but I think that's at least partly because I was trained to think of them as more desirable, just because they were harder to find (in circulation).

An "average circulated" (AG or so) Barber coin isn't pretty by any objective standard -- a featureless outline of Liberty, a flat eagle or wreath on the reverse, a mostly-missing rim. I was never terribly impressed with heavily-worn SLQs, either.

Today's coins? I've almost never seen an AG clad coin, even in photos. We simply don't work our change as hard as we used to; it's become irrelevant for daily use, because almost any shopping trip will cost you multiple dollars, and the only practical way to cover that in cash is with paper money.

What is there about a current-year Jefferson nickel or Roosevelt dime or Washington quarter that makes them more undesirable after a few months' circulation, compared to ones from the beginning of each series?

I should have added "IMHO" to the end of my post. But, I understand your position.

In terms of the coins themselves really nothing and they actually hold up better than old silver coins.

The one argument you could make is with all the rolling machines now, coin stars, vending/tolls, how they just get tossed into the car cup holder etc the lives of the coins themselves are just harder and more likely to leave them with ugly marks/scratches.

I agree with both of these observations. Given these observations, the low mintage of the W quarters, and the fact that they were only minted for circulation, I am thinking MS65 and higher graded coins might be worth acquiring. That is if you can find them n that condition.

I was lucky to find these in circulation early on. I only need the two more, which probably won't be happen now. :banghead:

I have several of the other two but nowhere near 67!

I guess I will have to settle for an ugly one since I won't buy one. And, I haven't seen one yet.

And this would be why I would NOT buy from EBAY raw like millions have and do.

I wish y'all would stop posting these fantasy threads about mythical W quarters. There's no such thing.

Everybody knows W quarters don't exist because I've never seen one, and I look at plenty of quarters.

You're not fooling anyone, so just stop it. Thanks.

Dang, it looks like someone shot poor George in the face with a coin gun. Twice. Unnecessary.

I've been lucky to find two 2019 W quarters in excellent condition, looking forward to the nickel and this year's quarter hunt.

Here's the second I found... I don't have photos of the Lowell W. Almost as nice or same. The side by side is W and D mints. Denver tends to put out very nice coins, but still not as deep luster as the W.

I would have to agree, seeing what these sets are going for on ebay. I would love to own a set of the 'W" mint quarters, but I have to think people are a bit bid crazy regarding these presently.

I'd keep it. Only 2 million in circulation and most of them will be saved and never circulate. It be worth more in a poor condition than in a Mint State condition. Lol
