Having lived near that area for 3 years. I can attest to that.....soot and ash and all the trappings of the industrial revolution
Stop using coins for money. Use bills only and tell people to keep the change to prevent coin circulation.
So if someone (the gov't) declared "ALL" coins (past and present) are no longer legal tender, would that kill the hobby?
I would think everything we all own would instantly soar in price as everyone would now want some. The dark side guys could suck it lol
What they should do is make another level of coins. So we would have Proofs, Then the "now" uncirculated circulation grade coins so people can collect these and not really worry about wear and tear, Then a "new" lower quality circulation grade coins. Which would not be at a collecting grade quality.
Only thing is everyone would be looking for the low grades more often than not for the increased chance of an error!
Just make a quarter a planchet with the number 25c on both sides and nothing else. Also increase production speed by at least 2x to create massive quality reduction. So much so that they wont have to stamp them any longer but just roll them using roller dies to create massive quality problems.
To quote the late, great Douglas Adams, "There is another theory which states that this has already happened.”
Was I guarantee nicer then than it is now. I think the Lowell/Lawrence area is the heroin capital of New England
I found another WIP W earlier today. This one is undoubtedly by far the ugliest W quarter I've pulled from circulation, and it's even uglier in hand.
There was a time when any US coin issued for circulation would maintain a high degree of collectability all the way from BU through Fair, or at least G grades. The quality of materials and manufacture ensured that the coins would be useable and desirable for decades. My collection is primarily coins I found in circulation up until about 1960. Todays coins become ugly and undesirable after a few months.
