Was a slow year for me. I've only gotten 16 coins, one I gave away, one is still on the way to my house and three others were gifts. I'll split up my list so you and skip the 2nd part with the Falling Horseman Here's my 5 pics for best non-FH coins of 2016 5. Julia Maesa (218 - 225 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IVLIA MAESA AVG, Draped bust right. R: IVNO, Juno standing facing, head left, holding scepter and patera. Antioch mint., 218 - 220 A.D. 1.97g 20mm RIC IV 256 var. (diademed); RSC 20a 4. ROMAN EMPIRE, FAUSTINA SR D. 141, DENARIUS 3.09g Head of Faustina Sr right "DIVA FAVSTINA" Aeternitas standing left raising right hand and holding a scepter in her left "AETERNITAS" RSC II 264. 3. Caracalla Denarius. 204 AD. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate draped bust right / VICT PART MAX, Victory advancing left holding wreath and palm. RIC 144b, RSC 658, BMC 296 Scarce 2. Pontos, Amisos, Mithradates VI Eupator, 120-63 BC, AE18 (8.09gm, 1h), struck c. 100-85 BC. Helmeted head of Ares right / AMI-ΣOY, sword in sheath, monograms in field. SNG BM Black Sea 1162. 1. Pontos, Amisos. Mithradates VI Eupator, 120-63 BC, AE21 (7.06gm), struck c. 85-63 BC. Aegis with Gorgoneion / Nike. SNG BM Black Sea 1177ff; BMC 25, p. 19, 69-71.
And for part 2 5. This one was hard to find, as well as finding one I could afford. Constantius II 26 mm DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG laureate, rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, holding globe; A behind bust RE-PARATIO Phrygian helmet, kneeling, one arm up R Epsilon / * over A left Rome 174 Scarce 4. Thismade is way to my collection because of the "epsilon <" field mark, uncommon and usually sloppier. It barely made its way on the top 5 list only because the one I gave away was a nicer FH lol Constantius II Unusual field mark RIC Constantinople 115. 3. A nice example of a harder to find type. Constantius II . DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG, rosette and pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. A behind bust / FEL TEMP R-EPARATIO, soldier spearing fallinghorseman w/ Phrygian helmet, sitting on ground, arm(s) up; soldier's knee on horse's rump. A in left field. Mintmark: PARL. RIC VIII Arles 121. 2. A recent one I podsted here, and probably my nicest FH that almost made the #1 spot. DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG Constantius II pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO soldier spearing Horseman, Two braids, reaching ALEΔ in ex. Γ in left field Alexandria 72 var. 1. I feel very fortubate to have found another I could afford, and nicer one at that. Constantius II 25mm DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG laureate, rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, holding globe; A behind bust RE-PARATIO Phrygian helmet, kneeling, one arm up RT / * over A left Rome 174 Scarce
Very Nice!! Like you, I find it a bit frustrating going after some coins and finding I simply can't afford them or are unwilling to pay as much as the prevailing market value. I especially like both #2's !!!
Nice selection. I like the patina on FH # 4 and the Victory on # 3 (she looks like she could be an Anaheim Angel shirt gun girl or a Lakers Power dancer).
I can't argue with your order of horsemen but might have bumped #4 up a spot or two just because it is so much nicer than mine.
Thanks all. The Alexandrian FH almost made it to the top spot. It's tough to pick since the Rome FH was high on my want list and took a while to find one . I always think of someone throwing a ninja star when I see denarii like #3
I like you geki, but I couldn't understand your numbering system ... I liked your Part 1, #2 coin (oh, but they are all very cool) ... apparently I'm not quite as big a fan of Fallen horseman as some of you ... my second favourite is your other Pontos Aegis example (Part 1, #1) ... Yah okay, I'm a Pontos guy (ya caught me) Cheers brother => all coins are awesome!!
Well done @randygeki ! NICE coins, and would definitely take all the first 5. The Fallen Horsemen are all great too!
Thanks guys. I got this out the mailbox today. I wouldnt have made the list but thought I toss in in here instead of making another post. Its a chunkier FH. I like Pontos a lot too. I need to find more.
Thanks! I got lucky. At the time I hand no idea what I was buying really, just another cool looking Greek coin in my budget range.
