Post a random ancient I went to random.org to pick the random folder ( I have my ancient is 3 groups) and which coin to post. http://www.random.org/ Numerian Æ Antoninianus. Rome mint. IMP C NVMERIANVS P F AVG, radiate cuirassed bust right / VNDIQVE VICTORES, Numerian standing left, holding globe & sceptre, KAS in ex. Cohen 121. RIC 422 scarce type
Well, I entered 1 and 257 and then hit "random number generator" ... => it came-up with #147 ... which is Domitian & Minerva on my coin list ... => cool idea, coin-dude
I wish I had an idea of what I own, let alone having them numbered. Maybe in a couple of years after I get my den squared away and the two boys are out of diapers.......
Out of my nearly 300 attributed coins, #255 it is: Justinian I, Byzantine emperor AE Decanummium Obv: DN IVSTINIANVS P AVG, helmeted, cuirassed bust facing, holding cross on globe in left hand and shield in right hand Rev: Large I, star in left and right fields, all within wreath Rome mint, struck 547-549 AD Ref: SB 308, MIB 228, Rare
Post it. Hopefully one of us on here will figure it out for you. But if its help in id'ing your coin you seek, it would be better to start your own thread for it.
What a surprise! Because I don't have an organized list of everything, I just counted the coins posted to my website. The random number was 34: Roman Republic, C. Postumius 74 BC, Rome AR denarius, 18.74 mm, 3.6 gm Obv: bust of Diana right, bow and quiver over shoulder Rev: hound running right, spear below; C. POSTVMI, TA in exergue Ref: Crawford 394/1a currently in the TIF Pink Floyd Animals collection; track 2, "Dogs"
Mine is coin #536, a Julia Domna under Caracalla with later portrait and Mater Deum reverse. This is a bit of a surprise since I have vastly more earlier Severans but random is, after all, random.
Cool idea! My random search using the link you provided Randy, generated #36. I've got my collection listed chronologically in the order I purchased them. 36 happens to be Severus Alexander, purchased a year ago today...how's that for random? Severus Alexander; AD 232 AE Sestertius, 29mm/20.4g OBV: IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG , Laureate bust right with draped far shoulder REV: PROVIDENTIA AVG , Providentia standing front holding two grain ears over modius and cornucopiae. (RIC V 642, Cohen 503)
Mine was 438: MAXIMIANUS AE Fraction OBVERSE: IMP C MAXIMIANVS PF AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right REVERSE: CONCORDIA MI-LITVM, Emperor standing right holding Victory on globe with Jupiter standing left, holding sceptre. Lower centre: delta (A, B, Gamma, Delta). Mintmark: ALE Struck at Alexandria, 305-6 AD 3.5g, 22mm RIC VI 59b
#206 for me, celebrating Caracalla and Plautilla's wedding. CARACALLA Denarius 3.3g, 19mm Rome mint, 202 AD RIC 124b; Sear 6794; C 23. O: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: CONCORDIA FELIX, Caracalla standing left, holding roll & clasping hand of Plautilla standing right.
Mine was #408. I don't have my coins organised in a way to be able to index easily but I do have some galleries that would allow me to find the nth entry. It led me rather unsurprisingly to a Sept. Sev. from Emesa... Septimius Severus denarius - RIC 426 Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right Rev:– VICT AVG, Victory walking left, holding wreath in both hands Minted in Emesa, A.D. 194 - 195 References:– RIC 426 (Rated Rare), RSC 675d. BMCRE 401 Ex- Barry Murphy coll., ex Roger Bickford-Smith coll.
Austyn, that's a mighty small and dark picture and the reflections from the plastic make it impossible to see the obverse. That said, I suspect it is a bronze of Alexander the Great, with bow case and club on the reverse. Something like this example from wildwinds (there are many variations): Can you remove it from the 2x2 and take better pictures?
Thats the coin it has those marks on the back so at least i know its not a dryer out piece of gum like it looks like.
