Welcome to CT and to our hobby!

Unless you are buying very cheap or common coins I would recommend sticking with ones that are NGC/PCGS certified. There are plenty of slabs in the 20-30 dollar range or even less that you can pick up on eBay if you watch what you are doing. Just look at past realized prices for the same coin in the same grade and don't get into bidding wars. By buying certified you can learn what problem free coins look like which will help you recognize dreck. There are lots of nice Franklins, Mercuries, war nickels, etc. that look nice and are fun to own. Our hobby can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be, and if you enjoy your coins who cares what anyone else thinks :)

Coins in the 20-30 dollar range slabbed are so cheap in-slabbed that I think it is worth the risk as long as you think and consider the coin a bit.

Bowers' publications are very good, although he can be a little long winded at times. There is excellent content in his work.
