Questions about the new "Presidential Dollar Coin" series?

I do not have a financial relationship of any kind with HSN. However, the company that sells the president medallions and coins on HSN simply pays me for the medallions that I mint.

He did when I was on the show, of course. The shows are completely unscripted. Some shows will present information that other shows don't have.

How is that different that everything else advertised on TV ? There is no difference. Everything on TV is hyped. Buy a brand new car and as soon as you drive it off the lot, it depreciates by 40%. Do I feel sorry for everyone that buys a new car or a diamond ring at the mall with 5x markup ? Of course not. They are grown-up and they can make decisions for themselves.

You won't be able to get UNC rolls of P & D president dollars at your local bank (maybe one or the other, but not both P AND D at the same location). It was hard to get any solid-UNC rolls of Sacagawea dollars when they first came out. If you order the president dollars from the Mint, you will have to pay shipping plus a mark-up above face value.

The PCGS, NGC, and ICG coins sold on HSN are graded to the same standards as other coins - they don't get special grades.

Well that is a worst-case scenario. But whose to say the certified rolls don't end up being worth more than face value ? A lot of the state quarter UNC rolls are worth more than $10. And how much gasoline and time would it take driving around to different banks trying to find one that even has UNC rolls of President dollars ?

Plated state quarters are not representative of the sophisticated coin collecting community. But there are a lot of casual channel surfer collectors out there who don't care about the same things sophisticated collectors do, obviously. Maybe some of those folks will eventually become sophisticated collectors. There is no such thing as a sophisticated coin collector who started out that way. I remember my first coins were a set of circulated, buffed-up, and over-hyped Roosevelt dimes, sold to me by the coin section of a large department store. Some things never change, they just look different.

Is it just me or does there seem to be very little general "hype" about the new PREZ dollars?

With less than a month before these dollars are released, I've heard hardly anything about them except through numismatic sources (i.e., CoinTalk, Coin World, Numismatic News, HSN Coin Show, etc.).

I was under the impression that Congress mandated that the government take extraordinary steps to hype this coin. In fact, I've seen very little information during daily commerce and it seems that the general public (for the most part) has no idea these are coming.

When the SACs were released, I remember being inundated with information about them (newspapers, Post Office, online stories, TV news stories, etc.).

Maybe the "hype" is coming in the next month, but so far I haven't seen much to educate the general public.

I love this design as well as the 2006-D Denver Mint 100th Anniversary $20 token. I see those are gone, I'll have to look around to see if I can find one.

Really nice work! Should consider a Michigan Parody with Superior breaking off to be the 51st State . Tom would enjoy that I'm sure... or a Toyota driving into the state.

    Thanks for sharing...

The HSN shows were broadcast live without taping. I haven't even seen the show myself. I'd probably cringe if I did  The CSN shows were taped, but I don't think they've aired yet.

    Thanks.
My idea for the Michigan parody quarter is as follows:
Show a Ford Edsel or something like that.
Above that, the legend "Detroit's Finest".
And below that, "Crashes to Crashes, Rust to Rust..." .

    How about a two tone
    Old motor city car with:
    • Wheel off leaning against side of car
    • Man leaning under the hood
    • in satin/rust color
Foreign car in proof like silver

Proof Sets will increase by three coins and Mint Sets will increase by six coins; I wonder how they will be packaged?

Actually, it will increase by 4 coins as the Sac will still be minted during the run of the series. They will be packaged in such a way where the edge lettering is clearly visible. I envision a solid plastic case with raised areas showing the coins pushed up like in the bottom of a shallow cup or pan hugging the coin closely.

I didn't know that, I figuered the Sac would be discontinued. Will the Prez be the same size as the Sac? Thanks, Douglas

The legislation specifies a continuing Sac, and the Dead Prez series will be the same weight and size of the same alloy, so they will work in vending machines.

Someone mentioned in a previous thread that the post office is changing over the stamp machines not to give dollars as change. It is funny that the mint is keeping with the size and weight but the USPS is abandoning the dollar coin.

Not quite, they are discontinuing the stamp machines all together - they will not have them any more. It seems they are a maintenance nightmare.

Thanks, again - that makes more sense.

There might be another thread on it, but I didn't see is, so I'm sorry if that's the case.

None of the links worked for me? The message is "the web site declined to show the images"?

I had to click on each link like three or four times to get the pics to work....

I like the one with the edge lettering, not sure what coin that is though from 2002... The only thing I can think of is a 1 oz Platinum Eagle maybe... I don't even know if those had it....

Also, you can go to the Root of the site he linked www.gettyimages.com and search for coin related images...

or easier yet, http://creative.gettyimages.com/source/home/homeCreative.aspx and search their stock photo database for pictures of coins, old coins, cash, money, dollars, etc.. some pretty neat pics acutally... I loked thought a load of'em...

Wow. I had no idea that some people that posted, are that big into minting. Too cool.

Side question, are the Presidential coins worth collecting? The Sacs? I have around 14 of them, which are about 6 different presidents, with some multiples. These are all from circulation.

If you want to collect the series for a big payday down the road, then the answer is no. If you want to collect the series for fun and enjoyment, then the answer is yes.
