I've been noticing that a unc St Gaudens double eagle sells in the neighborhood of a 1 oz Panda in certain dates. Why would anyone buy a Panda over a St. Gaudens? There are MS70 modern 1 oz USA eagles that sell for about as much as well. Wouldn't a St. Gaudens be a better investment in the long run? Its gold content is about 97% of an ounce. But that's a small loss of gold compared to collectability.

    Any thoughts?

Good observation. I studied this several years ago as it related to $20 Liberties vs. the one ounce AGE. Prices were lower then, but I concluded that the $20 Liberty was a bargain if you could buy a common date MS61 for $150 more than the AGE. Perhaps you can come up with a updated metric like this that will work for you.
