What's your secret for grading a Peace dollar? What are your key pickup points other than the reverse eagle's feathers and the hair on the obverse? They are really hard for me.
Hello. What resources are you using? Books, coin websites, by description or Picture grading. I use both if I can. There are plenty of good sites to help you. PCGS has an excellent grade by picture system. PCGS Photograde Online - Estimating Coin Grades Has Never Been Easier
Oh, I can look at photos all day. I've learned some of the nuances of Morgans but Peace dollars are a different animal. Where are the wear points, maybe I should have been more specific?
Not right off hand. I'm out of town, but this has been a question I've had for some time. I've got a pile of them and a few are quite nice.
I only have about 4 of them. Never really sparked my interest much. Morgan's are easier to grade in my opinion. Most seem to be around the same grade range and all "raw" in my collection. I guess experience prevails here, that's why grader's get the big bucks. LOL.
Well I just took a look at the site and it's problematic. I picked my favoritie US series and looked at a few pix. These were Liberty Seated silver dollars (1840-73). They had specimens going from ms-60 to 67: I didn't see AU 55 or 58 which is unhelpful and business strikes in 67 are exceedingly rare. For their ms-60, they had an 1850 which tends to have a PL finish due to it's low mintage. For the ms-61 they had a date in the 1840's which tends to be a bit frosty - a different animal. For ms-62 I think they had an 1860 which is also very different than the 1850. Thus their comparisons are like having an Indian Head Cent in ms-60 and a Lincoln in ms-61 and a Flying Eagle in ms-62. Not helpful.
